A bigger problem than waste oil is.... Antifreeze. I can find people and stores for waste oil but NOONE will take antifreeze..

A few years ago when the last real gas station closed in our small town we lost our most convenient way to dispose of used oil. There are auto parts stores in the neighboring town but that is not as convenient. I put a 300 gal stock watering tank in the corner of our old barn. I stood an old 275 gal fuel tank inside of the stock tank. I did it this way so that if the oil tank developed a leak the stock tank would serve as a backup. Several friends and even people I do not know dump their used oil into my setup. Last spring when it got full I called a place that goes to the oil change places and other commercial establishments and asked them how much they would charge me to pump out my tank. They said they would pump the oil out for free but charge me 50 cents a gallon for any water that had gotten into my tank. With my system all I have to do is open the valve at the bottom of the tank and drain any water out because the water would be lying on the bottom of the tank. (No water had gotten in when I did this.)
The more I talked with them the more I suspected they would have paid me something for the oil but I was too dumb to know that when I started the conversation.
As I said, this was last spring and the driver said they had over a million gallons on hand and it would be gone by this fall. He said they sell it to the asphalt companies.
I would call the oil change places or the truck garages in your area and ask what they do with their used oil. If they will tell you who pumps their waste oil you can call that company and ask them if any of their suppliers accepts oil from the general public.
If they will not tell you who pumps their waste oil, I would take a car in and get the oil changed and slip the guy in the pit a twenty and I can almost guarantee you that he will be glad to tell you who pumps their waste oil.

I agree with you that antifreeze is a big problem but we have an even bigger problem getting rid of restricted use farm chemicals that are no longer needed or allowed. Thankfully our county has a Haz-mat disposal week every few years when several employees don Haz-mat suits and put the stuff you bring them in barrels and seal them up. I imagine they go to a Haz-mat dump after that.

One good use for old hydraulic oil is for bar oil in chain saws. You have to saw a lot of wood to use 5 gallons of it though.:D

I don't mean to change the thread into a thread about bar and chain oil but there has already been a quite a bit of discussion about the subject.
A few years ago I ran out of bar and chain oil and didn't have time to run to town and get some so I googled motor oil and bar and chain oil. I wasn't interested in putting used oil in, I just wanted to know if I could use some new motor oil until I got to town. I found that they use canola oil in Europe. It is biodegradable and cheaper than bar and chain oil. I am not a woodsman so we don't use the saw a lot but we have probably put 4 or 5 gallons of cannola oil through the saw and haven't seen any ill effects.

I guess you never know how good you've got it. In the next county over the y have a place that will take anything you bring them. if your not a business they don't even charge you, just pull up next to a drive up window and hand it over. I've gotten rid of stuff that was in my fathers basement longer than I've been alive.

But that was all before I started burning wood in the garage and set up an oil drip. Now I have no trouble at all burning all that I consume. Free extra heat, plus it helps when getting a fire first a rolling:thumbsup:
Could you tell me about the oil drip set up? I have a wood burning stove in the garage as well.

My set-up is sinply an old air compressor tank mounted on the wall at a higher elevation and to the side of my barrel stove.

The air tank has a hole in the top to fill it, and a fitting in the bottom.

I drilled a hole in the top of the woodburner (barrel) and put a fitting there as well. These are collected be a steel brake line with a ball-valve on it to control flow.

Since I dont always have a fire out there, only when I am out there, It makes it nice starting a fire. Once the fire is going, I usually just let it go drip....drip...drip with about a second or two inbetween drips so I dont get the fire TOO hot.

I would also look at what kind of chimney you have as well. Make sure it is up to the task. I am not worried about mine since it is a 1000lb chunk of well-casing:D

canola oil

What you have to watch with canola or other veggie oil is it going rancid and clogging up your oiler. If you are an intermittent sawyer and the saw sits idle for weeks or months at a time, you should empty your tank when you're done and get some regular petroleum based bar oil through the system before putting it up.

Accidentally put a "leaking" pail on your tailgate and go for a drive down the dirt roads. OR, make some "County Road Commissioner" magnets for your truck and do some dust control.
