I have a place very remote and tried to plant crops nothing fancy just alot of vegetables. I've done this twice and each time the local munching committee (rabbits) in no time make it look like a moon landscape. As soon as anything starts to grow and is green its gone the next morning. I've tried electric fence and I've seen them jump 4' to trying to put up fencing (1/4 acre) thats alot of fence.

They just keep getting in, I've shot more than my fill and when my dogs see them they're not interested in them unless they're fried and breaded and served on a plate. They've chased the jacks at the begining but these things must have a turbo feature cause the really move. Any proven methods would be appreciated.

We don't have a garden, so have no experience there. But they do eat the young flowers too, so we've had some success with sprinkling blood meal around the plants. It seems to help, but is certainly no guarantee.

Have you talked with someone at your local garden center for ideas?

I love rabbit. Send me up a few dozen frozen. They would make for good target praticing and feeding the homeless if there are any food centers near you that could use them. Try to find some hunters in need of some food. The low powered sub-sonic .22 rounds would allow you to sit there and pick them all off. They do not crack like the long rifle rounds do.

You are talking Jack rabbits, right? Not the cotton tail in the north. The taste of Jack rabbits isn't the same as cotton tail, I don't believe.

Grumpa I haven't used it myself but I understand that a product called Liquid Fence will work to deter those pesky "wabbits". To read more information on the product click here. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's been so long ago that I really can't remember the difference, but until I was 16 years old, we ate every jack rabbit we could get. Young ones were good fried; older ones could be tough, but were very good cooked in the pressure cooker for rabbit & dumplings, rabbit stew, or to grind the meat after cooking to make sandwich meat (same as chicken salad, but with rabbit instead of chicken).

When I had a problem with cottontails eating my garden, on the advice of a neighbor, I broadcast about a 6' wide band of bone meal around the garden. He said the rabbits will not cross it, and they didn't. I still can't say whether the bone meal stopped them or whether it was just a coincidence.

We have both, in abundance, here in AZ. Cottontails, and black-tailed jacks.

I have a Greyhound with an injured leg right now because a cottontail got inside our chain link fenced yard the other morning. I looked out the window to see rabbit and two hounds slammed against the fence. The rabbit escaped by climbing (running up) the six foot fence and going over the top.

Poor kitty. We got them up here in Ma. too. Just not too many of them.
