What ever you spray or squirt them with just spin them around and everything is coated. If you you use something wax based like Whitelighning it will not attract dirt. You can buy it at bike shops. It comes in a liquid and dries in a minute to leave a wax film.

Good Idea!!! I have used this type of lube on my Mt. Bike chains before. Never thought of using it on the tractor.

I squeezed a little grease on 'em, and rotated them some. So far, I haven't seen any dirt buildup on 'em, but if I do, I'll go to WD40. Mine is also kept under cover.

I smear grease on 'em. I smear grease on everything that moves on the tractor! Seriously, I have worried about the dirt forming a grinding compound, but I have not seen any problems. Lately I have been using more white spray grease for many sliding points that do not have zerks. I just don't like the white spray residue it leaves, much better to have big gobs of grease oozing out! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mine are stiff from being new. I have sprayed them with penetrates such as PB Blaster, WD40, etc. to no avail. They are just going to be stiff until they get some wear on them. On my old tractor, I painted them with anti seize and they never rusted, always moved smoothly, and were easy to wipe the dirt off of them. The only down side is that the never sieze doesn't come off your hand or clothes if you get it on you. For this reason, I am back to using any spray that is handy. It is more important in my opinion to spray them when they are not in use, than when in use because they do rust quickly. Sometimes, there is something good to be said about a loose fit.

I have never oiled or greased them, leave dry in dry climate if they get a little sticky bash em with the hitometer then blow them with compressed air. In damp climate i don't know.

Spent most of yesterday on dry, dusty ground at a construction site, scavenging firewood. There was a constant cloud of dust in the air. A fine layer covered the tractor. I think grease on the 3PH ball joints would have collected plenty of dust. The grease oozing out around the FEL pins doesn't look real pristine. I'm not sure how abrasive the "slurry" is. I believe the JD manual recommends to oil the balls. I kind of like the "dryer" lube character of a spray like WD-40, especially in the dust.
