How do you refurbish an old implement?

Last summer I refurbished a 70's era Jacobsen fairway mower. I started out using chemical stripper, but its a mess and bad for both the user and the environment. I too did not have enough compressor to sand blast, but I did have a new pressure washer. In doing a little surfing research I found a sandblasting attachment to the pressure washer that proved to be just the ticket.

The water in the pressure washer knocks down the dust that you would have with dry blasting and I think it improves the efficiency. You just replace the nozzle of your pressure washer with the attachment, stick the pick up tube in a bag of sand and blast away.

The attachment isn't cheap, but compared to getting set up for dry blasting, it is a real bargain. As I remember it was around 125.00.

He even went to the point of putting "NEW PAINT" in bold in the listing, as if the overspray on the ground around it wasn't enough clue.

I just picked up a F160 Herd Broadcast Seeder at an auction today. This one was also frozen up with some rust and a lot of crud. Was able to get it turning this afternoon but have not put it on my tractor yet. Have seen the Herd website but don't have an "owner's manual" or any such thing. Can you tell me anything about it? Do you have the same one?

We have used most of the methods mentioned above. It really depends on what we are selling and how much we will ask for it. There is a point at which the customer will not pay for the added value. I suspect that most of the implements reworked (From the Heart) could not be purchased for Cost + time and material??. I bought a 1959 430W 2 cyl JD for $2500 and sold it for $6500 4 years later. Sounds like a good profit margin until we add the time and material. Cleared about $1000 profit on the unit--Ken Sweet

I did that with a plow last fall. I decided it was "just what I needed" for a tractor I restored. I spent over $500 on parts, another $40 on paint, decals added yet another $40. Then I spent around 40 hours dis-assembling it, sandblasting, priming, painting, and re-assembling. When I was done, I hade over a grand in a plow that is worth MAYBE $600... But it looks BETTER than a new one did 50 years ago.

Then I find out it's not nearly enough plow for the tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

And there's NO WAY I can sell it for even "break even price".
