The brakes are not working on my 10,000lb dump trailer. I think the magnets are ruined. The magnets have a little cross on the face of them that contains some kind of clip, it is not apparent to me how it comes apart.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks Bucktaker, I can push the magnet back on it's shaft far enough to get hold of the clip. It is not apparent how to remove the clip without destroying it. Do you just grab it with needle nose pliers and pull or do you have to twist it in some manner?

Thanks,

Tim

All the one I have seen you just push in on the spring and remove the clip. Before removing I would apply 12 volts and check them with a chunk of metal like a crescent wrench.

Diamondpilot,

Do you fly a Mitsubshi Diamond?

A few years ago I was coming down a long grade in Colorado with the trailer fully loaded. When I got to the bottom of the hill, I could smell a burning electrical smell and the brakes would not hold. They worked a little but not like before the hill. I disassembled the brakes yesterday and everything seems to be in order. The drums are only lightly scored, the shoes still have about 1/8" of brake material on them. All springs and adjusters are in place and working. The wiring seems to be ok, I applied voltage to each magnet and got some magnetism. Before I disassembled the brakes I tried adjusting them, that didn't seem to help. I think I destroyed the magnets by over heating them on the long down hill run.

The truck I was pulling with was a '96 Dodge 3500. I have since replaced it with a '06 Dodge 3500 with a Jake Brake. If you are pulling heavy loads in the mountains, the Jake Brake is worth it's weight in gold.

Thanks,

Tim

I flew Diamonds and Beech Jets at the time I made the name. Now I am currently flying something else. We got rid of the Diamond about 7 years back.

I also have flown the Grand Caravan, Pilatus PC12, Mitsubishi MU2, King Air, Cheyenne III, Citation, and Sabre 65 along with about 40 piston airplanes.

I would also replace the pads. 1/8" is not much meat left. If thats the case full backing plates with pads, springs, hardware, and magnets is the cheapest way to go.

Yeah Chris, I just got back from the trailer store and bought new magnets. While I was there I got a look at some new shoes and your are right, at 1/8" they are about half gone. I will probably replace the shoes while I am at it.

I live close to Abilene Tx and used to travel to San Angelo quite a bit for work. The MU2's were built there and I remember seeing some Diamonds at the plant also. Don't know if they were built there or not. I have owned and fly a PA22/20-160 since '89. Just for fun and a few business trips occasionally.

Nice. I would love to have a grass strip at the house and a little tail dragger like that. My copilot has a PA17 Vagabond that is a blast.

Hey -

Just get new backs - by the time you buy magnets and shoes, you will about pay for backs...

I know, it offends my sensibilities too, throwing stuff away, but such is the world these days...

i live in angelo, and My family printed all the flight manuals for the mu-2 . I remember they were translating a lot of the pages from japanese for some reason. This was in the early 70' i think. Guys at the plant said they were not friendly if an engine went down. small world indeed.
