Hello all,
I woke up a couple days ago to a garage floor full of hydro fluid. After pressure washing and removing the frame for the rear Back Hoe connection and tow bar assembly I noticed about 1/16" of rust from the lower seal stuck to the back of the Tow Bar frame. I don't want to touch the seal until I drain the fluid out. I'm pretty ticked this happened. I pressure wash the heck out of this thing. That darn seal should have been stainless or a gasket put between the seal and the Tow Bar frame. The two pieces were almost bonded by rust.

Anyway..... I've searched and searched everywhere. Nothing! Has anyone done this? On Messicks site it appears to be (03) Transmission\(07H01) PTO Gears\ (16) Cover, Seal SBA322140280
I need confirmation and advice. Can I just pry that thing out? Thanks

Well,
I've found nothing on the internet for this. I called the dealership last night and spoke with service. They have seen this before. But it's not to common according to them. I was told to empty the hydo. Since the seal is so rusted I should be able to poke a screw driver through and remove the beast. Looks like the new cover runs about 15$. Going to replace with new hydro (it's time) and change the filter n call it good. I'll update when I'm complete if anything needs to be said. BTW - Service told me they always apply RTV to this plug before installing the tow bar assy.
RIP Jinman! Sorry to hear!

Definitely not a well thought out design as far a the ability for the cover to retain water. It is basically a tin cover to seal up the end. There are 'plug seals' that are basically a seal that hasn't been machined for the shaft that do the same thing, but obviously won't rust.
RTV to install it to make the seal to the case and RTV between the hitch and plug to prevent it from getting water should take care of it.

In the past a lot of moist dirt /chaff must have collected on that area to start the rust process, or the metal was defective from the start. This is always a filthy area on most tractors that needs to be kept clean and dry, but I agree that it is ridiculous to have rusted through in the first place. How old is the tractor?

If I were you, I would drill a drain hole in the tow bar frame.

I know this is an old post. Looks like a simple pull n replace repair. Perhaps back the tractor up a steep incline so you don't have to drain the trans fluid.
