On a Yanmar 2210d, I was told this tractor has a power shift transmission. Is it necessary to clutch the tractor before changing gears? Does the throttle have to be at a locked rpm or do you control with the foot throttle? What are the advantages of this transmission. How about the PTO? Does it stop when you change gears? Confussed. Never driven one, only standard shift. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Change gears without the clutch, but come to a stop before switching between reverse and forward gears. Use the clutch to shift the PTO and the gear ranges. The PTO stops when the clutch is depressed. The powershift works like a standard transmission, except that the clutching is performed hydraulically by the tractor when you shift the lever. It has the benefits of power efficiency and the conveinence of shifting without the clutch.

IS this because of stress to the unit or the operator?

In snow and maybe other soft material U can shift back and forth if the wheels are slipping enough, BUT if they are slipping enough for U to feel comfortable there isn't very much traction. Just moved tons of snow on my FX24D & much of the time was just shifting from 1 to R, but as I said there wasn't much traction.
