Gee, that sounds like a stupid question, doesn't it?

Ok, here's the deal. I have a friend who has a big trailer to maneuver into a tight garage. She has a JD 2210 and I mentioned that rather than trying to put the trailer away using her truck, she should just use the tractor. I have (perhaps foolishly) offered to help get her set up to do this.

I know that the 2210 has a limited cat 1 3-point and does not have position control like my 2320. On the 2320, I just move the lever to the height I want the lift arms and away I go. If the 2210 does not have position control, how does it work? I've not used the 3-point on anything other than my 2320 so I have no idea how this works. The clearance between the highest point on the trailer and the garage door is very tight so it's important to get the lift height correct.

I'm sure if I monkey around with it I can figure it out, but I'd rather know ahead of time how it's supposed to work rather than spending a lot of time futzing with it on site. The last thing I want to do is mistakenly raise the arms (and the front of the trailer) too high and bash something while trying to figure it out.

In my limited time on a 2210 (my neighbor has one), you have to lower the 3PH all the way-and kind of nudge it up with the lever.

JD 2210 Operating Manual

The link above should take you to the 2210's operating manual. It shows the operation of the 3-point hitch......hopefully this will provide the info you need.

if you move the lever half way between the "neutral" position and up/down it will slowly move and then you return to the "neutral" position to stop when it's where you want it. I believe the term for this is 1/4 inching.

Great, thanks for the info and the link to the manual. I think I understand now. One direction to drop, the other direction to raise, and return to neutral to hold. I didn't realize how spoiled I am with the 2320 position control. The non-position control way seems a lot more complicated.

Just remember there is no downward pressure exerted by the tractor on the 3-point hitch so don't get yourself into a situation where any upward force on the trailer tongue would cause the hitch to raise. You'll need to use a chain attached to the tractor frame or other means to keep the hitch from rising. The hold keeps the hitch from droping lower but doesn't stop it from going up. With the heavy weight of implements this isn't a problem. Moving around a trailer is a different story.

Yep -- always a good thing to remember. Fortunately, this trailer has about 600lbs of tongue weight and we will be moving it on level ground. If there was any chance of upward force from the tongue, I'd definitely hook up a chain to the draft arms.

Sounds as though it's just like the lift on my 4010. Think the posters got it right. You can move it part way down, and it'll only drop that far. Then you move it to neutral to hold it. Coming up, I think you have to do it all at once (and typically very fast, depending on engine speed) or in jerks. At least, this is how I do it the 4010. You can move it all the way up and leave it. It returns to neutral once the arms are all the way up. It works great for end-of-row garden work: jerk it up and leave it as you turn for the next row, often hitting the turning brakes to make a tight turn (try this on a Kubota; no!). Main improvement would be to have a long "down" travel and a set screw or something there to put it exactly where you want it.

The main problem with the lever is that it doesn't have as much travel vs. the newer 2320 and 2520 ones. It's very difficult to move it directly where you want it because a tad off can put it off 1 or more inches on where the implement lands.

That 3 point control SUCKED on my old 2210 compared to the 2520.
