How does the Disc Edger work?

Hi guys -

Does anyone have the disc edger for the 422 or 425? How does that thing work? The picture doesn't make it clear. Does it have a spinning blade? How it it controlled? Does it have a little hydraulic motor on it? Does it edge/trench OK? The photo seems to imply that it can't be moved around much on the end on the boom. I'm very curious. Thanks!

Hey Rob - I had one - but traded it back in when I purchased some other PT stuff - it is OK for rough cut out work - but for fine bed edging I don't recommend it - I didn't like it much because it was very difficult to control / get a straight line - and virtually impossible to follow curved bed contours exactly - I would have been long finished with a powered one. Hand powered edgers do a far superior job for me - It does not work at all for trenching - I ended up buying a fairly decent powered edger for around $400 - it does the job - not as well as some more expensive ones - but I use it every few weeks primarily to keep a nice clean edge on all my beds (probably around 500 ft worth)

The Company - Bedshapers - makes a really nice one that will also do small trench work and create a very nice inside profile for the bed - it also has really nice steering control but I think that unit is around $1,500

The PT unit does not have a hydraulic motor - it just uses downpressure and the speed of the tractor on the disc to cut (the disc is not real heavy either) so it does not cut the grass that well.

Well thats my experience - I liked the idea originally but it didn't work out - Hope that helps - not sure if anyone else has one on here.
