How does the exhaust system effect the performance and power?

:)The exhaust as shown should not cause any problems other than hearing.:)

On many engines a lot of time may be spent designing the exhaust system for performance and sound.:)

Cam design, overlap and valve diameter do come into the design parameters.

So basically a tractor would run the same with or without an extention pipe or muffler, these are only use to quite down and devert the exhaust away from the operator, when seeing this photo I had memory of my childhood when having gocarts and mini bikes, I used to gut-out the mufflers because I like the loud sound, But I recall they didn't seem to have the power as when running with mufflers, I thought it was a cool tradeoff, atleast to me I sound like I was going faster:D

Those mowers may not have had the power when on a gocart because there would be zero back pressure and the pressure creates exhaust scavenging effect helping to burn more effective and cleanly and more power at least thats how i understand it but i dont think it makes to much difference when were talking 5hp mower engines?
