How Does Your Dog Score?

DrDan, question= how old does a female kitten need to be before being neutered?? I have a bunch of "barn kittens" to keep away the mice and I am seeing a small population explosion.

Normally we wait until 6 months old, but females can be spayed as early as 12 weeks; males about the same age.

Normally, that's what I recommend also. In dogs that tend to have weight problems by feeding twice a day, you can measure the amount and keep the calorie in = the calories burned up. It's also easier to housebreak a dog that is getting meals since they usually have to do their business right after a nap or meal.

Thank you for the compliment,

We have always given our dog all the food he wants, whenever he wants it. I often fill a bowl that would last a week or more before I would need to refill it. In the last 6 years (he is 9 now) his weight has not fluctuated more than 1lb in either direction at his annual checkups (I should be so lucky!). Sometimes he goes 3-4 days without eating anything, and then suddenly he goes in and devours the whole bowl. Other times he nibbles a little each day (always just before bed). I'd like to think we were smart enough to have planned it this way, but my guess is that some dogs, like some people, have a harder/easier time controlling their weight. I think what helps him is that we have a lot of land, and no roads close to the house, so he gets all the exercise he wants everyday.

Dr. Dan,
I have a 6yr. old golden retrever who I swear has an over eating disorder. She is a healthy 6.5-7 on the fat scale and has been that way. We feed her 1 1/2 cup in the morning and the same at dinner time. We can't let her out without us watching her, as she will eat anything she can if not watched. She feeds off our garden, pulls out carrots and radishes and eats them. Will eat the clumps of rotting grass that I scrap off the mower deck, also the neighbors compost pile. As well as other dog or deer droppings (which does wonders for her breath). If we don't feed her, she just waits untill she goes outside and grazes like a cow! Is this normal and can it be corrected some way? Other than this nasty habit she is a great dog.

Two of our goldens are perfect, and the other two are slightly overweight. No coincidence that the overweight dogs are the older two; the activity level drops with age but the appetite doesn't.

We've had a few emaciated goldens come into our rescue program, but typically it's the other way. We've had far more grossly overweight dogs surrendered to us or assigned us by the court. And typically these chubby dogs are starved not for food, but for affection.

But almost without exception, given a few months of TLC, the dogs recover their health, their confidence, and find decent homes in which to spend the rest of their lives.

Von,
That is very common... My German Shepherd loves that rotten grass scraped off the mower deck and also savors deer and rabbit droppings - cat crunchies are a savory treat! Dogs will be dogs. Some are just a little further down the evolutionary scale and act more like wolves. Fortunately the caloric content of poop and grass clippings and carrots and radishes is low.

Yes I think it is easier tossing "Bowzer" a steak scrap than taking him/her for a walk in the woods. Maybe that's a reason for the obesity we are seeing.

Maybe we're onto something here!

If letting our dogs eat all they want anytime they want results in perfect weight for them, then logically it should work for us, too. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I've used just about every diet known to man, and I've lost count of how many times I've lost 30 pounds, only to gain it back over the next 2 or 3 years. The one plan I haven't tried is the "all you want" diet. In the interest of science, maybe I should give it a try. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Before the doctors jump down my throat, the reality is that I maintain my best weight by (and this is revolutionary) eating less and exercising more. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Harv, could you post the design of the gravity feeder that you built for the 50 lb bags please? Kerry
