How does your garden grow?

I worked on getting rid of the tomatoes this evening. I got all hoses and soaker hoses moved, the haystring cut and balled up, the T-posts and wooden stakes up, and pulled some of the posts out of the ground before it got too dark to see. Tomorrow I will get the rest of the pots up, then recycle some of the potting soil when I transplant the few bell peppers that are still hanging on. With them moved, I can disc up a long section of garden. Now I just have to decide what to plant back in that spot. Speaking of tomatoes, have any of you guys ever grown hydroponically, or with lights. I'm going to give it a try. First outside with the sun, and if that works alright, I will see about getting lights and growing some through the winter. I saw this video on You Tube, and it got me ready to get going. YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcxCgP8TEaQ This is on the older Armenian cucumbers I transplanted a few weeks back. {one of the few of that planting that didn't get toasted by too much sun and too much 13-13-13} Three or four more days and it will be ready. And lots more little ones coming along.

Check out aquaponics. You can grow fish and plants at the same time. The fish waste feeds the plants and the plants clean the water. Pretty awesome, and you have a better climate for it than I do.

I saw some of that on You Tube. Today when I walked down to the pond, I passed the old fiberglass boat in the edge of the woods, and I thought about a large scale aqua setup. Even if it didn't hold water on it's own, some plastic sheeting would do the trick. I just need to find a smaller boat to go on top:D

I re-planted the 3 rows of Blue Lake green beans yesterday {after soaking them overnight}. I only had 5 beans come up. That was the week with no rain and high 90's everyday. I planted them in the rain, so that should help.

I got my hydro system set up this morning. More work cleaning out a spot to put it than the actual setup. I decided to go ahead and do it inside with lights. I got to thinking about all the rain raising the water level and washing out the plant food. This is 3 cucumber, 2 Armenian cucumber and 3 squash. I have 3 kinds of pepper and 2 kinds of tomato seeds {including purple ones} in starter plugs for the 2nd tub. Not rockwool plugs, I couldn't find them at Lowe's or Walmart. We are going to Panama City Sunday, so I do a Google search before then and see if there is a hydro supply store down there.

The 3rd plantings of peas and corn are coming along well. They were lucky with the rain. The squash are blooming. {and I see I need to hoe} Saw first Crimson Sweet melon this afternoon. Have been seeing Charleston Gray melons for a few days now. I found a bigger one later when I didn't have the camera. The Sugar Baby melons are growing fast. They too were lucky with the rain.

Last week when I went to the Farmer's Co-Op for green seeds I came away with two pounds:confused3: Turnip seed was $1.50 for a small scoop or $3.50 for a pound, so I bought a pound each of purple top and white egg. Yesterday I got some planted. Also used the 3930 with the cut down middle buster to lay out my trench for waterline to the new part of the garden. I went ahead and cut a short one across to the fence where I do my sprouts. It was always a pain mowing because of the hose stretched across there. I put the line down, got the spigot on and cover it in on the short run. I hadn't planned on it, so I need to pick up more supplies before I tackle the long one.

When we went to Panama City on Sunday I found some Pruden's Purple tomato seeds. Saw the first sprouts on them this morning. I couldn't find rockwool, so they are in peatmoss starter plugs. I will put them in small pots and set them under the lights tomorrow.

Pruden's Purple is very large, juicy and productive heirloom tomato. I have grown many pounds of them! :D

picked the rest of the corn tonight. There's more, but it's getting too old and bad. Picked our first cantaloupes.

I was looking to buy heirloom because I'm tired of buying seed. And I had heard about PP on a tomato growing site. Everyone had good things to say about it.

I parched what got too hard of my corn this year. Just leave it until it is dry enough to shell. Then mix a tbs olive oil with salt, dried red peppers, and whatever else you would like to add. You can do it in the oven, but I parched mine on the stove-top. My favorite so far is the garlic lime parched corn. I'm out right now, so I'll have to make some from store bought corn I guess.

When I planted the corn and peas this last go rough, it was in the same rows as the corn that I burned up. So there was 13-13-13 already down. All but the last row. You can see how the rest of it is outgrowing the row on the right. I side dress it this morning, and plowed the corn and peas.

Then I got my waterline trench cleaned up. I used a trimmed down middle buster to open up the trench, then shoveled the loose dirt out. I have the pipe laid out, with the upright piece glued in place. Also got Teflon tape on threads of spigots and tightened down. I have to go into work mid-morning, so I wanted to have it ready to put in the ground as soon as it is light enough to see in the morning. Anytime you are dealing with plumbing, expect something to go wrong. I would hate to have to call my boss and ask her to tell the customers, "sorry, but your luncheon is going to be late, Larro bought the wrong size coupling."

I'm putting a few seeds in soil tonight. Tomatoes mostly, but a few peppers too.
