how hard is brake job on 2N?

How hard is it to do a brake job on a 2N? I think it needs axle seals too. It is my Dad's. Niether of us has worked on this before.

The Ford "N" series has drums brakes like a car? I figure it must be simpler than it would be for my Farmall-A(could use brakes too...). From looking at the 2N, it does not appear to have final drives on it.

My Dad keeps hesitating, but I figure it can't be much different than drum brakes on a car or pickup. The axle seals make me wonder though... Seems to me it should be an afternoon job???

To put in the seals, (check the bearings too), you will need to pull the axles I believe. My experience involved putting in seals but not bearings, which I think were shot and the seals went out right away again. Brakes didn't work for long at all. Not my tractor, and couldn't talk the owner into putting in the bearings.

If your seals are shot, I recomend sure seals.. TSC carries them.. but like the other poster said.. check the bearings.. if the bearings have slop.. that's why the seals dies. If the bearings are good.. you'll have to pack them with grease, as when you put the sure seal on.. they will no longer be splash lubed by the diffy.

Also liek the other poster said.. axles and hub come out of the trumped as a unit. I'm guessing you actually have alot of media left.. buts it's hopelessly oil soaked.

When you reinstall, clean the drums with carb cleaner, and then adjust with the big square adjuster nut. The I&T FO-4 manual has good diagrams in it.
