How much higher can we expect diesel to go here in the US---they are selling alot of US refined Diesel in Europe for over $15.00 per gallon?? x per liter---They tell me that a 5 gallon bucket of UTF brings over $100.00 in England. Freight can't be that high something else is causing the big difference in price. Any body from Europe able to reply??? Some friends at the refinery in Lake Charles says that they refine the oil off one ship and put the diesel on another ship bound for England. No wonder we don't have no refining capacity. Hugo owns that refinery they call it Citgo!!!

The US used to subsidise the cost of fuel - the price you see in the US is lower than just about everywhere else in the world. The US is going into debt for fuel, and it isn't going to get any better. Fuel will not get cheaper.

If we converted the worlds agriculture to produce bio-fuel for 1 year, that would produce 10% of the crude oil we go through in a year. Plus no-one would have food to eat.

We aren't running out of oil (maybe about half way through the total world supply), but we are just about all the way through the cheap, easy-to-get stuff.

Check out ASPO International | The Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas and imagine the economy when world demand (especially China) exceeds world supply (and supply slowly dwindles).

At the pump in Australia Diesel is around AU$1.70/litre (hmm, AU$6.44/US gallon, US$5.62/US gallon).

If you google for "diesel price europe" you get a few motoring groups doing fuel-price-watching, giving price in Euro per litre in july of around 1.43, which should convert to US$8.05/US Gallon.

The pump price of fuel in the US has absolutely nothing to do with the pump price of fuel in Europe.

The pump price for gasoline is approximately crude/42 + 60 to 70 cents add-on for taxes, refinery profit, shipping and service station profit. This varies from state to state. For diesel, many states tax diesel higher than gasoline. In Virginia, it's another 60 or 70 cents.

In Europe, it depends on which country you're in. They ALL tax gasoline at a MUCH higher rate than in the US.

Last time I worked in Italy (back in the early 80s), I didn't like having to maintain the cash flow to pay for tankfuls of gasoline (no credit cards taken back then). So, I rented a diesel. It isn't taxed much because Italy charged about $1500 extra when you bought the car/truck. That made diesel about 1/3 the price of gasoline.

The reason fuel is so expensive in Europe and elsewhere, is because it is much more heavily taxed. It is used to subsidize public transportation, among other things. The cost of petroleum, before the add-ons (like tax) is comparable to here or anywhere else.

MikePA-----Have you ever heard of supply and demand?? If you can make a profit just shipping a product---you will----I understand the tax situation but a friend imports and exports and they go crazy if they have to add very much oil to the imports in Europe. They claim a 5 gallon pail of hydraulic oil cost $125----that can not be tax alone!!!

Yes, I have. Given the same cost of raw materials, there's no way you can add the cost of shipping a product to Europe and selling it there versus selling it here with much lower shipping costs, and still make the same profit much less make more profit by shipping it to Europe.
