The factory relay on my Max 22 wouldn't light the glowplugs. I don't now if the relay failed or a temp sensor went bad or what. If I jumped the relay terminals they would light. I tried to get a wiring diagram to chase down the problem but didn't have and luck. A new relay cost over a hundred bucks and I didn't want to spend that much on a "guess" so I just rewired the glowplugs using a Ford starter solenoid and a waterproof push button on the dash. Removed the factory relay and I used a couple of electrical terminals to connect in the new solenoid to the factory wiring. Didn't have to cut any factory wiring. Works great. I push the button and count to 5, then start it. Cost me 15 bucks.

I’d bet his mom, wife or someone else in the family thinks the timer is priceless!

OP did a great job making an easy fix. Seems like a smart idea!

I did the same thing on a 1984 Chevy 6.2 leiter diesel about 30 years ago. Being an engineer and a total geek I added a timer of my own design. It worked well from then on

I thought about using a NodeMCU with a built in esp8266 so I could time the glow plugs but I figured a push button would do the job. I don't need WiFi on the tractor ;)

I'm about this far ---- from disconnecting the "auto-magic" glow plug/heater timer from the circuit on my Hurlimann.

It is far from adequate in respect to starting the tractor in frigid Vermont winter temperatures. The timer "times out" in seconds after the key is turned, and subsequent efforts result in even shorter heater times. I need at least 30 seconds of heat without interruption on this Mitsubishi 4 cylinder. I just don't know the design of the heaters and if they will tolerate the prolonged energization.

I suppose there is no issue when the tractor is in southern Italy. ;-)

Turning on the heater for a long time could defenetly burn it up. Sounds like some research is warranted.

If I am not mistaken, there are glow plug/heater arrangements where the glow plugs can run indefently. My old 84 truck had 6 volt glow plugs in a 12 volt system. They could defiantly act as quick acting fuses.
