How I start AIR COOLED tractors W/O Block Heater

I used to have to get diesel trucks going in very cold weather. One thing we did was put some charcoal briqets in an old hupcap or garbage can lid, light them and then set them under the engine. Relatively quick, high heat and no open flames.

The ash pan full of hot coals also used to serve this purpose.:D

If one thinks that the spark plug alone ignites the fuel in a gasoline engine, they would be wrong.

Just like a deisel, the compression heats the air/fuel mixture almost to the flash point, and the spark merely pushes it over the edge. Insufficient compression, and all the spark in the world won't be enough to start the combustion.

With an old weedeater, lawn mower, etc., a few minutes of hot air from a hair dryer blowing on the cooling fins works fine also.

I have one of these Kerosun heaters that I fire up. Then I put it up by the radiator. After that I drape some plywood and an old piece of carpet above the heater and over the hood of the tractor. That collects most of the heat around the engine which makes it a lot easier to start for me.

The other day I had to move my 2WD Deutz D10006 to get the manure spreader out after not being started for 4 months

So I got all my starting weapons out (Jumpers,ether...) and before I left the neighbour asked me what I was doing so I told him and he told me " To start a cold air cooled tractor without block heater get a 5 gallon pale of boiling hot water and splash it on the motor" So I got myself a pale of hot water and got to my trusty old 2wd Deutz and splashed the water on it and jumped off and got comfortable cause I thought this might take a while..

To my suprise the starter turned 4 times and she came roaring to life ... Wow that took me by suprise

The point of this post is for people without a block heater to learn how to start their tractors easy

Not sure if you know it or not(I didn't, and have had mine for 15 years) but they have a intake heater on them. My 100 always started, no matter how cold, so I never needed it. I thought it was just a Deutz thing, because I have trouble with all my other tractors. So I decided to buy another one, a 80-06. When it started to get cold, it didn't want to start either, and after some phone calls found out about the heater. If you have the original pull type starter switch, you will notice it has two positions. When you pull it out slowly, about halfway, you will feel(and hear a click if its working) a click. Hold it in this position about 20 seconds(depends how cold), then pull all the way out to start position and should start right up.

If you have electric available and your wife has a hair drier, remove the air filter, stick the dryer in the intake on high and it will fire right off.
