How Is The Weather In The NE?

Typical Winter like we used to have years ago. Nor'easters dumping large amounts of snow in March and possibly even in April. :confused3:

Just that so much development has taken place in the woodlands, on the farms, and on the coast line over the years, storm damage is more severe today. And of course in today's world, people can't be inconvenienced even by natural occurrences.

Its winter-spring in North East Pa. Hopefully it will warm up and melt it soon. Thankfully we were spared a lot of the outages that the Poconos got in the first storm. The last two have not been that bad.

24" on Tuesday, by yesterday it had melted down to about 6" except where the deepest drifts were.

Lucky on the power here, after hurricane Irene a lot of the trouble branches have been taken down and the wires fixed, we lost power for a week on that one but for these few just a few flickers. Probably means we'll lose it on the next one now that I've said something.

Lost a couple of fence posts on the first one which was just wind and rain here, but got a couple of t-posts driven in next to them to hold the fence up. Had a 15' spruce tree blow over a bit but got it winched back upright and a few straps on it, we'll see if it reroots over the next year. Lost a 4" maple branch and a shrub on this last one.

March lion indeed been snarling and roar month of March :( snow banks now higher than Dec,Jan.Feb. and next 4-5 days single numbers for temps, mud season and sugaring been put on hold until March lamb decides to return.

Biggest hiccup we had so other person driving skills  narrowly miss couple fender benders they need to slow down, than walkers/joggers least 3 a breast during nasty weather  but I do have cure for them. ;)

I'm not an arborist, but if the spruce was healthy to begin with, and only half the root ball was pulled free, it should recover. Just keep it braced and make sure it gets enough water through the next few months. If too far for the hose, a couple of 5-gal containers run out to it at least every week will help a lot. About ten years ago after a bad blow, I pulled several 25' and 30' Leyland Cypresses back up with a tractor and guy-wired them for awhile. Happily they've all done very well.

The amount of damage to very large, mature trees around here, deciduous and evergreen, from the Nor'Easter two weeks ago is really stunning.

Him just south of Boston.. We got hammered and trees were down everywhere...and still are. We lost 8-10 big trees on our property... A couple GIANT pines dropped across the bottom of my driveway, I'm guessing 110-130' tall. The base was 40"+. The two biggest ones were blown over root ball and all as they were down near the edge of the pond. The slab of mud/dirt/roots was easily 12-13' tall on its side.

We live in one of the Berkshire Hilltowns. Our elevation is ~1400'. The last 3 coastal storms dropped 7", 12", and the last storm 14.75" with some wraparound leftover snowbanding. We have had +81" of snow so far this year which is around the new "average". And as previously posted an April snowstorm is not that uncommon round here. Even with the increased solar angles we still have +1' of snowbase.

It has been a long winter! We're sitting at approximately 145 inches of snow so far this season with a snowpack averaging around 1 1/2 feet. With the wind from two of the last 3 storms, we've had snow drifts on the roof of over 6 feet. Got those off quickly. I will be glad when this winter is over!!!

Good Afternoon Larry,
Probably 24" on the ground ! Nothing horrible as some of the other posters have stated ! We are used to it, waiting anxiously for mud season ! ;)
