How long did YOUR freezer last?

Korea had to get rid of the Goldstar image of low quality appliances as they made advances in their technology and started making high quality items and this is why they relabeled their products LG.

Korea started out making cheap junk just as Japan did in the 1950s and like China also did. Everyone knows how much Japanese products improved over the years and Korean products have improved now also. LG, Kia and Hyundai are now some of the highest quality products on the market.

The Chinese are now starting to make higher quality products as the US, Japan and Korea have invested their money and technology in these countries in order to take advantage of their cheap labor. Many of the LG items are now made in China to Korean specs and it is only a matter of time before practically everything is made there.

Not based on experience, but just watching, I agree that Hyundai has improved a lot. They used to be kind of like Yugos in terms of quality and they fought that image successfully with a 100,000 mile warranty. Good marketing move and it forced them to look at quality and improve it or they would go broke. Years later, they aren't broke.

We compared LG and Samsung and bought the Samsung refrigerator as it's design was clearly more well thought out. We'll see about reliability, but I am optimistic that it will be better than our Whirlpool.

A lady in town had 2 freezers quit on her. One was an upright Frigidaire freezer that is/was 15 years old when it quit on her.

And the other one is a 2003 chest freezer that is 12 years old made in China by Haier.

The upright developed a leak and the refrigerant leaked out.

The compressor still works, but not worth fixing it. The chest freezer had a stuck relay and I got it going now. Keeping my food cold. Not sure how much longer it'll last but I'll keep an eye on it.

She said she got her money's worth out of both of them.

The 70's model sears coldspot mini fridge I pulled out of the dumpster is still going strong right now.

A friend of mine that has an International Harvester freezer that's still running. Gotta be from the 50's??

I've had one freezer, my parents got it about 1963 when they bought into some "Richfood" bulk beef plan.
I've moved it from Vermont to Virginia and about 2012 I moved it to Mississippi.





It was sure easier to move with the tractor!!

I think if you ask any of the appliance "pros" (not the big box store guys) they will tell you that no appliance will last long today. Washer/dryer maybe 8 years. Fridge maybe 10. Freezer maybe 10. All by design my guy says..."planned obsolescence" to ensure the manufacturers existence.

I find that "Energy" efficient often translates to less longevity.

The big copper wound motor is not as efficient as a something smaller...

Also, controls are almost all digital these days... great when it works... not so good when it doesn't.

We bought our first one from Sears in 1986. It was an upright. 5 years ago I gave it to our nephew for deer and we got a chest freezer. As far as I know, that upright is still running, so about 29 years or so.

When I was a kid, we had a commercial Tyler freezer in our pantry. It was a chest freezer with some sort of warm storage on one side over the motor and compressor. I think he bought it in the early 50's. He did in '95 and we gave it away. It was too large and too inefficient, but built tough.

My parents are still using a stand-up freezer they bought before I was born. I'm 56. I think it's a Frigidaire.
