How long do you typically own your stuff for?

Much to my wife's dismay I try to keep things until they start melting back into the environment. Why would you buy it in the frist place if you are not planning on keeping it forever.

I kept the first pick up I purchased used, 1963 Jeep J-300.
Now it is worth keeping as an antique.

I try to wring every mile out of each car and truck we have had over the past 28 years. When my wife refuses to drive them any longer it's time to look for a different one.

I have only purchased one new car, 1972 Chevy Vega got 125,000 miles out of the car before it rusted out. The first engine lasted 75,000 miles the second engine had 55,000 on it when I sold the car.

My old Ford 8N is still running. I did buy a new Kubota, used tractors were too expensive for the age and hours compaired to a new one.

I think buying used cars and trucks is a better deal. The depreciation on a new one in the first year or two is enough to buy a decent used car. Insurance and registration is less expensive on used stuff.

My commuter car is a 1989 Ford Festiva 186K, easy on gas and I know how to work on it. We originally purchased it for my wife when she started college.
My weekend vehical is a 1988 Chevy S-10 Blazer 151K. I need to replace the main seals; its startin' to leak oil.

The car I owned when I was in high school wasn't this old.

The wife has a 2000 Ford Windstar.
Everything was purchased new, but I'll probably buy used from now on (at least for me).

John,
I'd guess if the F350 has reasonable brakes (no ford truck I ever drove had good ones), Engine has no blow by after it's running a bit, fair rubber and the box ain't to rusted it's worth $1000 good body maybe $1500. Manifold leaks are a pain on the these trucks. If it has the 390 engine it's a keeper. If it still has the split rims on it, get rid of em the first chance you get.

My 66 is a farm use (read off higway) only. Trooper ticket books don't have enough pages in them if I ever got pulled over.

85 chevy pick up 159,000
89 chevy z24 cavalier 120,000
93 chevy G20 short wheelbase van, 93,000

New cars are one of the biggest wastes of money that a young person can make. As soon as you drive it off the lot it goes down in value, the insurance is high, the plates here in Indiana are outrageous, as is the excise tax. A good used vehicle, even with $1000.00 budgetted for repairs each year, is still much less expensive than any new car. And if you don't like the car, just sell it for what you paid for it and get a different one. Just my opinion, of course /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

...In my experience that's still not necessarily safe.

Safety is certainly an issue but presumably the cost of at least meeting the requirements for the annual safety inspection are included.

My wife and I are truck people, we don't do cars. How do you haul anything in a car?! We buy only Chevy or GMC trucks (same thing). We buy them new, and keep them for 250,000-300,000 miles. I change the oil like clockwork, and haven't had a major repair on our last three trucks! We had all at least 250,000 miles. Right now we have a 2000 GMC full size van with 48,000 miles, and a 2001 Silverado pickup with 25,000 miles. No repairs at all on either of them yet. We'll have them for many years.

42 years old and only 3 vehicles registered for my use

1973 Dodge Dart Sport

1982 S-10 V-6 5 Speed ( totaled in 89 with 145,000 miles)

still driving
1989 Dodge W-150 ( 213,000 + miles)

I seem to change vehicles ONLY when they get totaled.

A person can do alot of repairs for the price of one Car payment.

I don't know if I'm CHEAP or FRUGEL, but I do know I'm BROKE.
