How Long should Dealer Have your Machine?

My dealer had mine for three years. Make a long story short, he quoted me $500.00 to fix something then called and said $750.00. I said I'm coming down and you will sign a quote stating that and that's IT!. I went to pick it up and he wanted $1,200.00. I walked out. HE wouldn't budge and neither would I. Three years went buy and when I needed work done I hired a guy to do tractor work. I sued the dealer for 5K the max. I proved my case the ( with that signed piece of paper ) dealer lost had to pay me 5K for all the work I had to contract because he held my tractor hostage, and I paid him nothing.

I think that will be that last time the dealer jerks customers around, but maybe not.

WOW, is all I can say...............

When I was a young guy, I used to do a lot of automotive work, including full engine rebuilds. It was an easy choice, as I could not afford to pay someone else to do the work, on my old cars.
Now I am older with a little more money, but alot less time. I do not have the time to do routine maintanence and would rather pay someone to do the work.
With the service I have received from The John Deere Dealer in Crown Point Indiana, I either need to try another deeler or do it myself.
I understand "Busy". I do not understand telling a customer one week service then not even looking at the equipment for a week...
I do not have the machine back yet. Lets see how the story ends......

Some times you just have get your temper up and complain. I had a car dealer in Canada once where we needed some warranty work to fix a rattle in the front bumper. Not a major issue, I think they just loosened some bolts and added in a rubber grommet for the fix, however it took 4 weeks to get an appointment, my wife dragged herself out of bed (she had the flu) and took the SUV down to the dealer and they promised it would be ready by 4 pm. When she called, they said they didnt have time to look at it and she would have to reschedule for another appointment 3-4 weeks away. She hit the roof, got a ride to the dealer and first gave the service rep a piece of her mind, then lit in on the manager. Needless to say she got an appoint for 7 am the following day and it was ready by 9am. From that time on, she got good service whenever she came in. I guess they all remembered that fiery little Venezuelan from that day forth. Sometimes you just have to get nasty to get your point across, just like I had to with Walmart when they wanted to prorate a battery that was a year old and had a 2 year FREE replacement for which I had the original sales receipt and warranty slip plus it was also written on the battery. Their explanation was that I should not expect to use the battery for a year for nothing even though I asked them the "What part of FREE Replacement for 2 years do you not understand". After I gave them all including the manager a rather large piece of my mind and at least half the store must have heard the argument, adding that I would take it up with the regional office if I didnt get my battery replaced, I left with a new battery for no charge.

It probably ain't got a thing to do with if your a farmer or not,,its how much bussiness some people give to places,,and yeah,a farmer would probably throw a lot of bussiness to certain places, first name basis, future bussiness, etc.

For issues like this I will try and fix myself before I spend the bucks to take to dealer. I've had my tractor down for a few months trying to figure out what was wrong, but finally got it running. Now I could have used it, but in those couple of months I learned a lot about my machine. If I encounter something I'm not sure about I go the internet and ask questions. There are tons of great people willing to give you help. I've great luck here and since I have an older machine I use ytmag.com also.
I would post your symptoms in the John Deere section and see if they can help you.

As far as getting the dealer to work on your machine, not sure what to tell you. I would either call every day or pick it up and take it somewhere else, letting them know that you will never be back. Since they mainly deal with lawn and garden I'm guessing they depend on service over sales for profit. Good luck.

Why are you still messing with the dealer on this? If the service is all that bad, and you don't want to do it yourself, take it somewhere else. Dealers aren't the only ones who can repair a tractor/mower.

My NH TC 33D still goes to the dealer, because I've been happy with the excellent service they provide (if they did not, they wouldn't have my business). My Craftsman garden tractor goes to a local small engine shop... who also has excellent service. Both generally do good work in a timely manner. When they are busy, they let me know up front, so I can make appropriate plans.
