Personally.. I think the generac people are FOS... sounds like salesmans speak to me.. typical non engineers trying to give advice on stuff they know nothing about.
electrons are electrons.
if you have a low noise, regualted supply that is at proper battery charge voltage.. it will be NO DIFFERENT than the line their ATS would be sending back to charge the battery.
can't have the cake and eat it too.. so that proves the generac people are FOS and don't know what they are talking about.
( conversely.. that means they may just want to sell you THEIR charge kit.. )
Mind you i would not use a 'dumb' battery charger.. or an un regulated float that had other functions... battery voltage can go too high in some cases... that's why a regulated and emi/rfi filtered supply will be fine...
