How many bottom plow per horsepower?

Thats true, another issue is if the plow is set up properly and if the tractor has draft control and that it is set up properly. If the plow is not set up right, the tractor will pull it hard. If the tractor and plow are not set up right you are wasting a lot of time, energy and money.

Technically, a plow is designed to go about 1/2 as deep as the bottoms are wide. A plow with 16" bottoms are supposed to go 8" deep, a 14" plow is designed to go about 7" deep. Plowing 12" deep with one is more than it was designed for.

Since plow bottoms range from 12" - 20" and more, and depth is somewhat up to the operator, and soil types varry so verry much, and different manufaturers came up with different designs (Oliver was often thought to be the best around here), and one can set up a plow to pull easy or pull very very hard:

First off, weight of the machine has a lot to do with the size/number of bottoms. The hp will tell how fast you're gonna move them.

There are some pics around of steam tractors with 30 hp or something pulling 50 bottom plows and such. Slow going though.

Dargo was talking about a 2-16. that's a big plow. The common dearborn for the 20ish hp machines was a 2-12 or a 2-14.

My ford N's ( 26hp ) were rated for a 2-12, or a 2-14. or 1-16

My ford NAA (34 hp ) was rated for 3-12

Smaller thractors like a IH cub or an allis G in the 10hp range commonly pulled a small single plow.. like a 1-12.

A JD B is rated for a 2 bottom pull plow.. 2-14 would be fine.. and that is onthe upper end of 28ish hp.

Soil conditions will affect plow conditions.. plow configuration also has alot to do with it.. towed plows and 3pt plows, and mid mount plows all behave differently. Draft sensing hyds also greatly improve the performance of plowing. I can run a nicer furrow on my old 26 hp 8n than I could on my newish ex-NH 1920.. 33hp.. and the draft hyds were a big factor.. Even thought the nh was more hp.. heavier and 4wd.. the look of the furrow was better on the N.

I pulled a 12 incher with my 1957, 9 HP Power King. The soil was mostly clay and it did strugle when you plowed virgin soil. Most of the time we were plowing a garden and it had no problem in that situation.

In the picture my uncle is driving the PK the day after it was delivered. That was one fine tractor.

I pull a single 14" moldboard with a kubota L3000dt with NO problem. it would easily pull a double but i just don't have one. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I don't know how well it would do if i didnt have 4wd though.

You might want to start a new thread. This one is 10 years old.

As to size, I have no idea. There is more to it than just HP. What does the machine weigh? What kind of tires? 4wd or 2wd? How big are the plow bottoms? 14"? 16"? 18"?

Get a tractor picked out first, then ask about the plow with more detail in a new thread.
