A few years ago, I saw a tractor laying on its side and a batwing mower hanging over a retainer wall with cones on the shoulder around it to prevent anyone stopping directly under it to rubber neck. The slope that tractor was laying on was twice as steep as I would ever go on purpose. From what I saw, it looked like a soil slide (like a mudslide) had caused the accident.
I often see tracks of tractors on each side of overpasses where they went more sideways than up and down. I don't mind going going up slopes so steep I lose traction, but it will be a hot day at the North Pole before I drive sideways along those slopes like the mowers do on a regular basis. I'll just get a thrill being a spectator.![]()
Jim,
I just stated that DOTD deems a 30 degree slope "safe" to mow. Not me! There's a LOT of other things that I don't agree with them on.
Note: The DOTD engineers, who design highways and R-O-W slopes, don't actually mow them either.
