How many eggs can a snake eat daily?

I've been letting a big rat snake live in my barn to keep the mice out but now I'm missing about 6 chicken eggs a day. Is it possible that a snake can eat that many a day or do you think he's invited his relatives for dinner?

he might eat that many in one day but he probably wouldn't need to eat again for a while.

I saw a Black Snake that had eaten two eggs and was going for a third when I moved it. Did not see it again but it is possible it came back for more from time to time.

I once dispatched a huge black snake that I could count 7 eggs in his body and two of them were bigger duck eggs! I knew he probably wouldn't need to eat again, but once he learned where the eggs were I figured he'd return for more!

I would put a few ceramic nesting eggs in the nests; one of those and he's history.

I'm still missing about 6 eggs a day so I reckon I have to get rid of my snake(s). I've been seeing one in the barn for years and he is a little over 6 feet long now. I haven't seen him in the last couple of weeks to try to catch him so I guess I have to use alternative methods.

I don't have any ceramic eggs now but I heard putting a golf ball in the nest will do. Does anyone know if this is true or just a rumor?

Oh wow. That creeps me out. If I found a 6ft snake in any of my sheds there would be a new "door" out. I respectfully leave them alone in their natural environment. But I couldn't deal with walking into the barn everyday wondering where the 6ft snake is hiding. Might be in that open sack of seed I just picked up....... Creepy......

Yeah I think that is a more humane option too. Plus you get to use your gun and take pictures.

I'm with you guys. I cannot understand why anyone would think causing an animal a slow painful death is acceptable.

I think the biggest reason for the golf ball/fake egg use is that it gets the snake even when you don't see it or are there to catch it; in other words, an auto-catch system. But what the heck do I know?

I agree that dispatching it immediately is far more humane.

If I could see the snake(s), I would catch it/them and release it/them out in the swamps. But it might be months before I see it again and it could eat many eggs and chicks by then. It just shed again in my barn and I measured the skin which is 6' long.

I hate to kill any animal without a good reason and although I had many chances to catch this snake in the past few years, I let him alone because he seemed to be keeping my barn free of mice. But now I am losing a couple dozen eggs a week and 4 chicks disappeared this past week so I have to do something. I looked for him to no avail because there are too many hiding places in my barn. Since I can't catch him, if I knew a quick painless way to kill him I would use that method.

Once he eats a golf ball.......hit him with a 7 iron.....that will do it!:laughing:

We always have black rat snakes around, and they will poach a few eggs. That's what the fat pronged pitch fork in the chicken house is for. This year I caught one that had killed a baby chick way too big for it to swallow....I think....it never got the chance. So I bought "snake away" mint oil pellets that were sprinkled around walls and in cracks and it seemed to work. Smells nice too.

Well, I finally caught the rat snake today but not before it ate 2 of my wife's 6 week old turkeys. He got through a very small hole in the turkey cage and after eating he was too big to get back out through the hole.

My wife thought it was a rattlesnake because when he saw us he started shaking his tail making a buzzing noise which is how they try to scare off predators.

There was no releasing this snake. My wife was so upset that it ate her "babies" that she made me kill it and cut out the turkeys. You could easily see the bulges in the snake where the turkeys were. It measured 6' 7" long.

And to answer my question, I can say that this snake could easily eat 6 eggs at a sitting.
