how many hours should be on a brand new tractor?

You want your new tractor to have some hours on it. That means it's been tested. If it has more than 5, It's been used a little. More then 10 or 15 and you should be able to get some money off.

If you don't have the 50 hour service already in the contract, I'd ask them to throw that in, fix the scratch and go with it.

If you want a perfect new machine with only a couple hours on it or less, then you can wait.

My 4110 had more hours than that on it as new and I got a very good deal because of that. To put it in perspecive though, it's really like buying a car off the lot with couple hundred miles on it. Not a big deal.

Oh, yea. A "Scratch" means different things to different people.

There is now way I'm waiting for a brand new machine to arrive because of ten hours!!! When I want something I want it now!! Ten hours is absolutley nothing... If the machine I want is on the lot, with the same specs as I want on the lot, yup... ten hours... who cares.. I'm still getting it. Now when you have to have a special order put in, you are opening up another can of worms... is the new machine going to make it in on time... is it going to have everything I want? who cares.. that's being a little too picky..... buy it, and be done with it... life is too short.

thanks, and you are right! I made a decision to have the dealer order another tractor for me. just felt better about it. My local JD dealer has been terrific. Now, just got to wait!

Are you serious? you are going to subject yourself to the agony of waiting because of ten hours? You realize the new machine after set up etc might have at least 2-4 hours on it? So in reality you are subjecting yourself to the torture of waiting because of six hours?

you can get that tractor and get a free oil change or something like that out of it, if you feel you need to push the issue of a few hours....

I'm sorry but I could never torture myself because of this non-issue. Some may disagree, but that is being too picky in my opinion.

You did the right thing if that's what you're most comfortable with... I'm sure the 10 hours is no big deal like others said and I'd be fine with it as well. However, if you're going to pay for a new one make sure you're getting exactly what you want. I have 2520 on order... expected delivery date is 3-16-06... ohhh, the agony of the wait /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Enjoy your new machine...

I agree with Jason. 10 hours is absolutely nothing. Most of our tractors are brand new and they usually have 5-7 hours on them. If your dealer is really that good they probably dynoed it for a couple hours. My dealer works every tractor for 2 hours after the dyno just to make sure there are no problems or leaks. 10 hours is like a coule hundred miles on a car. If it's been at the dealership for six months or so they will have 10 hours on it just moving it in and out of the weather and around the lot. I agree with Jason it's nothing and that's being a little too picky. It is a tractor. But nothing wrong with being comfortable and ordering a new one. I just wouldn't have worried about it.

honestly, if I were the dealer, deep down inside I would be thinking to myself, you know there are just some people you don't want to have as customers... because I'll get him a new tractor, their will be 4 hours on that by the time he gets it, then when he does get it is he going to be haunting my shop every two seconds after he gets it...

I own my own retail business, and I know it sounds bad, but I'll be honest with you, even though you want to make every customer happy, and you want more customers all the time, and the return business of customers, and you want to take care of your customers, the ones with the legit problems, but truth is the super picky ones are the ones you don't want as customers...because as time goes on you realize it wasn't worth the sale, because another guy would have came in and bought this item and that would have been the end of the story.

I know this sounds bad, but this is like not buying a car because somebody else test drove it around the block a few times, and by passing this car up, it could be up to another month and a half before you get it... all that lost time you could have been using it, because most people put 5-6 hours on the first time they get on the thing.

I'm just sitting here on my computer just trying to make sense of this? I guess why I find this so amusing and so funny is because I had to wait two and half months for my new machine, and it was pure torture.... it was ****. It was the pits. I was secretly marking off a hidden calender til when I could get my new tractor.....

And then when it came it had 8 hours of testing, and set up time on it, and I couldn't care less.. because I have it now, and it is perfect.. first day I had it I put another 8 hours on it...javascript:void(0)

I wish you could see my expression on my face, because I know out of context this text looks bad, but if you were in this room right now with me, we'd be having a few beers together, and I'd be razzing you for this like friends do....

Like Doc, I have to agree. 10 hours is nothing. When I buy a new tractor, if it doesn't have a few hours on it, the dealer isn't doing his job. I want it right, before I get it and they have to put hours on it for that to happen.

Agree with many of the post above about the 10-hours and yes, dealers Demo them and it's academic, because the warranty is new; however, ordering a fresh unit is the way to go, because there are no SURPRISES, again nothing against 10-hours, but I would want to see the machine. Reason saying that, you are about to fork out some dollars and have a high expectation and the 10-hour unit may be in their eyes only minor issues, so fresh is mostly likely a good call since you can't put your eyes on it.

Believe me, the last thing your good dealer wants is you to come in and be disappointed, but rather happy /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Don't worry about anybody telling you you are a bad customer or that you are wasting your time. It's not our money or time you are considering, anyway. As far as the decision to wait for a virgin machine, I might do the same. It sounds like that is what you want and that is what you should get.

As far as the 10 hours, it just depends on the explanation given. If they were demo hours or the dealer used it to cut the grass at the dealership, I would think he would be able to tell you that without remorse, still call it new, and you could accept it as new. If there is no explanation, then the decision is pretty simple based on your wants. 10 hours is nothing for that machine as everybody has said, but you worked to earn the money you are spending, not us.
