I agree, but these homes are often 6-8 per acre!
Now, I do live on a 1 acre lot.....but my house costs considerably less than half of $500,000 and there are no McMansions in sight.

And with one kid going to college next year and only one left at home, we have seriously talked about doing what you mentioned. Less house, more acreage, out in the country.
I do not mean to offend anyone, and lots of people will disagree, but I think the suburbs are the worst place to live and I can sya that because outside of my college and med school years, that's pretty much all I've lived in since I was 5.
I think country living would be ideal, but you know what, I could also live in an urban environment too. I'm not talking about the wrong side of the tracks in LA or Detroit, but in the right places city living has much to offer. So does country living. Suburban living...not so much.
Of course, if money were no object, I'd have a home in the city and one in the country like the Charleston blue bloods of old. THAT would be perfect!.
