It is apparent that I will be requiring a compact diesel in the fairly near future, due to the lack of choices in gasoline units and the better reliability and performance. However, I am very sensitive to the stink of diesel engines. I have been assured by a good friend who is in charge of maintaining the machines at a very exclusive country club that the current crop of small diesel engines do not stink all that much.

I was impressed with that lack of nausea encountered with a little Kubota unit running once, but I wonder about the Mahindras, and the other compacts in general.

Do they stink now? Will they make me sick in a few years when they begin to wear? What do you say?

I've not noticed any real problem with the smell of diesel from the CUT's that I've driven. That may be because many of the CUT's now have the horizontal exhaust that comes out under the machine.

Or, it may because I worked with mass transit buses for 15 years, and my sensitivity to diesel fumes is all but non-existant! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Seriously, I don't think it's as much of a problem as it used to be. The diesel engines in these machines are so much more efficient, that the vast majority of the fuel is being very cleanly burned. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And then there are those of us that enjoy the smell of fuel burning and the sound of diesels rattling. Hense my post name "dieselsmoke". It sorta grows on you after time. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I can only speak for the two diesel powered tractors I've owned. The Kubota B7500 I own now has significantly less diesel exhaust odor than the John Deere 2210 I used to own. Having said that, almost all of my use has been loader work. The 2210 required a higher engine speed to achieve the same loader response. So, the greater odor could have been caused by this. Whatever the reason, I prefer the lower odor.

The only time I notice real heavy diesel exhaust is at start-up - I get a black cloud that quickly disipates(sp?). Once the revs get up there, the smell is MUCH less noticable. If it really bothers you, try running some biodiesel in the mix - it smells like overdone french fries /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

I can't stand the smell of UNBURNT diesel, so I always use disposable gloves while filling my cans or tractor.

Amen.

Seems to me that one newer tractor shouldn't stink any more than any other CUT since most all of them have similar engines, most are even made by the same companies in Japan or Korea. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

at start up, and a few minutes of idling, mine throws a little black smoke and stinks somewhat. However, I have mine under a canvas tarp system and if the wind is blowing, you won't notice/smell it anyway. I never have noticed any odors while operating it either.

Have you looked at the Cub Cadet tractors? They have a "new" line of sub-compacts that are both diesel and gas. The gas versions are 25hp Kawasaki engines. Here is a link to their website:

http://www.cubcadet.com/servlet/BrandProductDetail?ID=137&CAT=8&SUB=16

The models are 7252 (2WD) (gas), 7254 (gas), 7264(diesel), & 7304 (all 4WD) (diesel). They have a variety of attachments available ranging from front loaders and backhoes, to mower decks, to tillers, etc. They seem like very capable machines! Also, PowerTrac has some gasoline powered tractors. You may want to give them a look see, too! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I think their website is: http://www.power-trac.com
