No one ever said N.H. was tax free, we just don't have either an income or sales tax (outside of lodging and prepared meals). I don't see that property taxes here are all that different than neighboring states. Certainly high compared to southern states to be sure, but total tax burden in N.H. isn't abnormally high, it's just that most of it comes from one source.
AFAIK there is no such thing as a "view tax". Please provide link to a state statute if I'm wrong. If you have a nice view it will likely be incorporated into your property assessment, but then again a view does increase property value. No doubt if you had a view it would be a factor in setting your asking price if selling it would it not?

In CT, my 1991 K1500 costs me $115 for the two year license plate but my 2011 Ram 3500 costs me $397 for that same two year registration. The property tax on the GMC is $85/year and the property tax on the Ram is $900/year.

New York state has property tax on land,also county and for some city/village.Two year registration for cars/trucks,ATV's and snowmobliles.Yearly on trailers.Right now a 8% sales tax.We also pay NYS income tax.

My taxes seem to go up every year too, and I'm surrounded by woods...no view at all. Did Lebanon re-assess this year? There is an appeals process if you don't think your property assessment is correct.

As much as we grumble about taxes going up after re-assessment, it's really a much fairer of doing things. Some states (Florida is one) does not re-assess property...what you paid is what you're taxed on. Great if you're still living in the same house you bought for $30,000 back in '75, not so much for a newcomer.

All in all, I prefer our system where you write one (or two depending on how your town sends its bills) big check than have a whole bunch of nickel-and-dime taxes that are largely invisible.

Illinois yearly registration for light trucks and cars is 100$ I believe we have the fifth highest gas tax also. We don't pay property tax on vehicles where I live. We pay sales tax every time we purchase and register a vehicle.

Illinois taxes on gasoline, per gallon (federal tax is 18.4 cents per gallon.) 6.25 percent sales tax (5 percent state; 1.25 percent local). Tax is paid on price before the state motor-fuel tax is included. 19 cents, motor-fuel tax on gasoline/gasohol; 21.5 cents on diesel. Some municipalities have additional tax per gallon.

With hybrids and electric (or other alternate fuel) vehicles becoming more common it wouldn't surprise me if that changed in the future. It would be easy enough to require mileage to be noted when re-registering, a road use tax bill could be generated from that. I'd expect much whining and bleating from those who own them and are getting a free ride now, but fair is fair. It's a matter of when, not if. As to whether it would reduce fuel taxes, well....never underestimate government greed.

When the Prius first came out the Federal Government gave a tax rebate to increase sales. The reduced emission decreases pollution. Some non-hybrids are getting better gas millage than hybrids. For these reason I do not see a millage tax in our future specifically aimed at hybrids.

We don't either. For those who live in states that do, what "personal property" counts towards it? Do you basically have to inventory your home and account for every clock radio and set of dishes or is it restricted to "major" items (definition open to interpretation)?

As PJSprog stated, you make up for it somewhere. Sometimes it's just buried deep in BS.

For a diesel light truck/utility/pickup in NZ you pay $300 (or about that) per year for registration, and about 10c/mile for RUC road user charge. That's including the blanket GST of 15%, is still 15% on food, do not get me started on why but it is. Easiest way is to be self employed and claim your GST back as 'staff rations'
Petrol/gas powered vehicles pay no RUC but have a much higher tax on the fuel.
Pump price for 91 octane $1.85 per litre
Pump price for diesel $1.30
Pump price for 98 octane $2.00 or more
Farm diesel costs around 90c
I think about $68US=$100NZ
or in other words they charge us $5-6 per gallon here. Glad they haven't thought of property tax yet but it's just a matter of time. No capital gains tax but it is being considered too.

Wouldn't surprise me. I live in Illinois and work in Missouri. I almost always try to get my gas over there, as it seems to average around 20¢/gallon cheaper. We have all the refineries on our side of the river, but we also have stupid-high taxes on it.
