i have a roll of plastic garden mulch that i bought maybe 3 years ago. it was originally 4000' but i've used it to plant tomatoes and melons. i am now planting melons in it and i think i will need 600' more to finish. is there a way to tell if i have that much left on the roll? or do i have to go find out when i really bought it(it could have been more than 3 years ago)and then try to remember how much i've used? is weighing it the answer if i know how much a full roll should weigh?

That could be an interesting problem. If you know how much a given length weighs that would work (whether this is a whole roll or something like a 10' section), just find out how much it weighs per foot and divide the weight you've got left by that number.

If you need 600 fett, I would assume you have about 550 feet left! at least that is what would happen to me!!!

I heard plastic mulch and I was thinking of the 1/2" thick rubber mulch my wife uses around her plants. 4000' of that would be quite a large roll indeed 
If it's a thin sheet of plastic that wouldn't be a practical formula unless you knew the thickness of the sheet and just measured. Clearly weight is a much easier solution and probably less prone to measurement errors. A rough guess of 550' would match my experiences, too

a full roll weighs 84 lbs. what i have left weighs 35 lbs. so there should be 1,666' left. i use it in 100' lengths so I will weigh it again after a couple of more rows. the weight should go down by a little more than 2 lbs per 100'. something seems wrong about it weighing 2 lbs per 100'. o well...we'll see. it felt a lot heavier than 35 lbs carrying it uphill from the field.

If there's a heavy cardboard tube you can deduct that. If you assume 4lbs for the tube then you've got 2lbs per 100' and 31lbs of material left meaning 1550'.
