It was amazing how many very fine filings were on my magnets suspended in the tank. One of the better things i did.

Need to add magnets.... As far as changing system oil, at 100 hrs I Pumped out 5 gallons of the factory 10/40 and replaced with 5 gallons of full synthetic 10/40 castrol. It was $19-21 per 5qt container. I bought a 5qt container every 3-4 weeks so as to not have wallet shock. I,m at 220 hrs now and will probably do the same this summer. I'm hedging on the synthetic being able to better withstand the shearing forces/heat/pressure that regular oil.

red zebra I had seen others that had mentioned gradually changing over to synthetic oil by when they added oil they would add synthetic oil, and this was in my mind when they talked about it but I never posted. Since you mentioned that you were going to pump out five gallons and add back synthetic oil [ I just reread your post and you have already done this], anyways if I was going to do this, I would put back the money that you paid for the five gallons and then added money to it until I had accumulated enough to do a complete change out at the same time. In theory when you pump out the next five gallons half of it will be synthetic and the other half will be regular oil. By doing it the way my thoughts are you would be getting out ten gallons of regular oil and replacing it with ten gallons of synthetic oil. Wished I had posted my thoughts when I first saw the idea of gradually replacing the oil, by posting it now maybe someone else might benefit from it. Some people have a hard time putting back money for a designated project so my idea might not work for you, or you might have to hide the money out of your sight until the time comes to do it.

I've been doing some needed work on my PT which is approaching 500 hours. Been thinking about the change to synth for the hydraulics(motor has had synth since day 1). I notice some different weights being mentioned. Is there one weight better than the others for me since I drive the PT in the winter for snow removal and other bucket related functions? I doubt I would ever run the tractor in temps below 25 or so. Is there a thread discussing this?

So I'm guessing that since I'm at 1800 hrs, I shoulda drained and changed the tank oil by now!:confused2: Guess I'll do that this week.

I am running Mobil 1 15W50 in the transmission. I would not recommend this if you don't store it in a heated garage. It will not start somewhere below 60. I don't know the temperature accurately. It would not start at around 45. I had to heat the oil with a block heater and pull the plugs and heat them. My garage is made of ICF and has an R11 door. It rarely gets below 60.

I figure I have dumped my tank at least 5 times over with all the hose breaks and leaks. Stuff looks pristine.

Glad I went for the cheap stuff up until now.

Which engine do you have?

Which engine do you have?

Robin 22 HP. I have upgraded the starter and ignition coils. I don't experiment a lot with this. I just had trouble in the shed, and decided that it would stay in the garage from then on.

red zebra I had seen others.....

I'm not entirely convinced the resevoir holds a full 10 gal. The system might be 10 gal but some of that is spread out through the hoses, motors, tram pump, filter, etc. When I pumped out 5 gal the tank was really low. I wonder if it's possible to pump out 10 gal from just the resevoir. ???

Anyway, seemed like a good idea at the time....
