Oil & Fuel How much oil ???

   / How much oil ??? #12
After reading the manual

He makes no mention of opening 2 drains so I made my assumptions!!!!;)

By the way - my 3940 calls for 8 qts and takes 8 qts give or take a couple ounces.

When I changed the engine oil in my LS, I got one plug out OK using a pipe wrench because I didnt have any allen wrenches big enough to fit. While the oil was draining, I took the plug to auto parts and got a fit for the allen head. When I took the other plug out which was really tight by the way, not more than 1/2 guart of oil remained. Unless the Kubota engine is a lot different than my engine, I cant see it being 2 quarts in that channel

hey guys, I'm not an amateur at changing oil in these tractors or for that
matter in any machinery. I've been at it several years now, just had not run
into a manual that was that far off on the amount in any other machinery.
this was my point in asking the question. I had also never heard that there
could be as much as 1 to 2 qts. of oil left in a small motor like like this
after you let it drain properly !! Also that there was two different oil pans
on these tractors.
Just a warning too others that might not be as familiar with equipment
as you all are.

I always prime my oil filter first as well. Yes I know it's on it's side but fill it half way with oil, let it settle for a few minutes then screw it on the engine. Your motor will love you for it.

Will try that out on our next oil change. Is your Kubota filter a short one?

So did you remove BOTH drain plugs????

Yep. It's a short one. I've been priming my filters most of my life ad it DO make a difference especially during the initial start up after the oil change. Yes it might be a little messy but it's really wort it.

I must admit I've ever heard of two different oil pans on the Kubota Grand L 5740. I don't remember seeing any mention of it in the factory service manual either.

We are all just curious, did you pull both drain plugs or not? There are two halves to the oil pan and has has an island in the middle of the pan so that there is a place for the drive shaft that drives the front differential to fit through. So if you only pulled one drain plug there would be a fair amount of oil in the other half of the pan. Now I am not sure how much would be trapped on the other side if you did not pull the plug, but it would be a fair amount. The reason we want to know whether you did that or not, is to get an idea of how much would be left, so that the next person that comes along with this problem, we would be able to advise them better. That is all, we are not trying to make you feel bad or anything. We want to help people.

When I change mine, I am guessing that one side holds about 2 quarts by the difference in drain pan levels.

When I look in my book they show one style pan for the 3240, 3940, 4240, 4740 & one style for the 3540, 5040, 5240, 5740

Yes I did take out both drain plugs. I thought I mentioned that I had previously
owned a kubota L 4200 some years back and it had the same divided oil pan.
I don't understand why a Kubota mechanic would say there was two different
pans and the manual does not . Or how this little motor could trap the 1 1/2
to 2 qts. of oil up in it.
There has got to be some other explanation for what they say it
holds ? Later
