Filled mine with doggy safe antifreeze. I paid $6 for a fill adapter, the solution was free from a car dealership. (They have to pay to dispose of it...) We have been doing this for several years and not a hitch, yet...

Doggy safe is NOT doggy safe. It is SAFER, but it will still kill a dog, cat or kid. That is according the poster on the wall of my Vet's office. She said rather than a teaspoon of regular antifreeze to kill a large dog, the pet safe stuff will probably take a 1/4 cup to make the dog really sick and a bit more to kill it. Either way, WASH DOWN THE AREA if you have a spill and love your kids or pets.

about $5 for an adapter between your air chuck and your garden hose, for those who live where plain water won't freeze in the tires. See attached.

To use the adapter:

Jack the tire an inch off the ground, and air down to 9 psi. (Lower might unseat the bead).

Clamp the chuck on the tire and install water. The garden hose has more than 9 psi so it will fill easily. Leave the tire valve installed.

After filling about 1/4 rotate the valve to the top, and bleed for a moment to clear water out of the stem so your air gauge won't be damaged.

Check air pressure and make sure you haven't exceeded the maximum stated on the sidewall. Bleed air back down to 9 psi before adding more water.

Repeat fill/check/bleed maybe 4 times until water is nearly up to valve at 12:00 position. Find the water level by rotating the tire to 10:00, 11:00 etc while bleeding off air. I filled mine only to 11:00 so when I check pressure in the future, water won't come out and damage my gauge.

Replace Schrader valves (tire stem valves) with new ones. Mine didn't seal well after this water was put through them.

In the future check air pressure with the valve at the top. First bleed off a little air to avoid damaging the gauge.

The Goodyear Farm Tire Handbook has charts showing the weight of loaded tires.

I have filled dozens of tires, but have never left any air pressure in them, while filling. Nor have I ever had one unseat from the rim.

If you used environmentally safe antifreeze that was previously in a vehicle, then it is no longer considered safe for consumption. That stuff is really only safe when it is fresh out of the bottle. Once it runs through the cooling system for a few years, it's no longer any safer than the regular stuff. At least that's what a couple of mechanics have told me.

I've never experienced a dog or cat having any interest whatsoever in drinking (or lapping) anti freeze. If it spills from a tire (rare), there would likely be no puddles for them to lap up even if they "wanted" to.
Is there just a little bit too much hype on this idea, or am I just ignorant in some way or another to not see it as even a 'minor' problem.

Is there a site that talks about animals 'drinking' antifreeze?

Just interested. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Here's one, but there are many available on the web. They say pretty much the same thing, that antifreeze is quite sweet and tasty for dogs. Mother_earth_news

Just google on -- antifreeze dogs poison like

You will find lots of information including info about the "pet friendly" versions.

I used the antifreeze because it was free, had rust inhibitors and works.

I realize that anything that is unnatural can pose problems, especially if consumed in large quantities. Thanks for the heads up as to its safety.

I still think it is a viable option, that like my Remington nail gun, is a great tool, that could also really hurt you.
