What a sickening feeling. I bushhogged about 5 acres Saturday with my B9200 and a Woods BB48. It did awesome. After I finished I discovered that a lot of fescue had been wrapped around the mid pto. My mid pto doesn't have a cover, so I'm assuming it was lost by the previous owner. I removed all the wrapped up grass/weeds and parked the tractor in the garage. A couple of days later I notice oil leaking from around the mid pto. My guess is that with the mid pto spinning inside all the grass, heat built up and ruined the oil seal.

I think, Ok, this is a problem, but I need to mow. I top off the hydraulic fluid, attach the MMM, and mow for about 45 minutes. I then park it for 30 minutes to finish my weedeating and come back to find the oil "drip" is now an oil "run". It looked like a good 2 quarts were already on the ground. This was the sickening feeling I talked about.

Anyway, I'm taking it to the dealership where I bought it tonight after work. Is there anything I should look for, point out, or ask? Also, any ideas on what it might cost?

Thanks, Indy

Indy: even those of us without mid pto's will await your report, once you get a quote from your dealer, out of simple curiousity. I had looked, at some time in the past, at the service manual for my 8200 to check out the mid pto option, and I seem to remember that the pto was mounted outside of the engine, rather accessible. That means, if yours is similar, that fixing it shouldn't be too bad? Good luck.

Probabl should be relatively inexpensive. I think list price for the entire mid PTO on the L series is about $300.

Sounds like just a seal to me. 10 bucks and 1 hour labor max. Get quote before and make em show you any more damaged parts they have to replace. I seriuosly doubt there will be as you would have started hearing noise from it and you did not report that.

Just an update....the tractor is back home and probably in better shape than when I bought it. I don't have the bill in front of me but I'll do the best I can. It was the oil seal that was bad, it cost between $10 and $20. I think they charged me 2 hours labor, and they charged me a premium price for the hydro fluid. I also bought the mid-pto cover to avoid this in the future. Overall I still feel good....when I first saw the fluid pouring out of the tractor I thought it was going to cost me a lot more than it did.
