in Michigan, if it is farm use and nothing else, you can fill out an exemption form and pay no tax. However, if you plan to use it for anything ither than direct farm use (as in .... "no, I don't use it to plow the road") it is the standard MI 6% Sales tax.
One of the things that bugs me ... since you brought it up ... here is the extension of the sales tax to "USE TAX" ... wherein you play sales tax againa nd again and again when you buy used vehicles. In Alberta ... we paid Federal sales tax on a new vehicle and on a used vehicle only if buying from a business (who has to collect sales tax on everything including the air you breath ...).
This crap of calling it "use tax" so they can change you sales tax everytime a vehicle changes hands is as unfair as you can get!
