You have to have one heck of a hot fire and have it burning quite awhile to get a carcass to burn down to ashes.

Have a local friend who raises cattle with names like "Big Mac", "Whopper", and "Arby" so his kids don't think they're pets...

Interesting and very relative topic. If you got livestock, at one time or another, you have to deal with it. We had our last animal go down Saturday night. Sunday I went down the road a mile or so to where I knew a contractor lived who had a hoe parked outside. I had the figure of $100 in my mind and when I asked how much he said $100. He came over an hour later, dug a hole about 8’ x 6’ x 8-9’ deep. I already had a chain around David, he lifted up and set him down and backfilled.

I only had one horse die when I was a kid, but that's exactly what we did. At the time, Dad was working for an oil field company that gave him access (free) to large quantities of big black rubber cylinders; 8 to 12" diameter and 18 to 24" lengths with about a 2.5" hole through the middle. So we piled those all around the horse. The smoke was much like burning a large quantity of tires, so I assume you couldn't do that now-a-days, but 50 years ago, we didn't know the difference and no one objected.

To weigh in on the conversation here.

One thing to remember. If you are called to bury an animal (assuming a huge animal because we are talking backhoe) just remember to verify if there are any utilities in the area.

About 15 years ago in your State of Tenn. there was a fellow who buried a Horse (or Cow) in the pasture where it died. It became an event at ATT becuase there was a "right of way accross that pasture" for a Trans-Continental Coax Cable.

Now there is fiber running everywhere. Be careful, it gets expensive.
