From many years ago, we went out for a days XC Skiing and on the way up there was a sign telling us to pull in and put on chains, we were exempt as we were in a 4WD but pulled in anyway to grab a drink.
While waiting two girls driving a Mazda 323 pulled in and with a minimum of fuss fitted chains to the rear wheels and headed off on their way, no one said a word, just looked on in disbelief and even more amazingly they got to the top through heavy snow without incident.
Mazda 323 is a FWD.

Yes, I have done similar, on a difficult 4WD track we got stuck on a short but steep bank, we were in low range and had got this far unimpeded, I got out and checked everything and discovered that when we started I had actually disengaged the free wheeling hubs.

Germany about 1970 I was living on the economy, (shacked up). Neighbor also shacked after a storm said he couldn't get out of th driveway and he had put chains on. Went out to help. Yep, chain, not 'chains', one rear wheel.

Yep.
I was driving my ATV, pulling a cart, checking out some swampy, muddy areas where spring flood washed away my culvert.
All of a sudden I'm stuck, and had spun enough to bury it to the skid plates. Huh?
Dooh! Only had it in 2WD. 4WD got me going again with a lot of spinning and mud throwing. The worse part was my cart acted as a rebound board to deflect the 5 gallons of mud coming off the rear tires back onto the ATV and the idiot driver!

Many years ago the CO and I were headed home late one evening in our 4x4. Couldn't get up a hill due to mud, so I tweaked the front hubs and still couldn't go. Put on chains on the front. Still no go. Put chains on the rear and got out. Later I found out one of the hubs was engaged and the other disengaged.
