How often are you not in 4 Wheel Drive?

Not in maybe 25%.I have many hills around my house it's in 50% when I mow lawn.All the time with loader again HILLS.

My B2410 is almost always in 4WD even when mowing. The B2410 has a feature called "Byspeed turn" where when a turn is made when in 4WD the front wheels are driven at a faster speed than the rear, and actually pulls the tractor around the turn. Even on wet turf the turn does not destroy the grass when in 4WD. I really like this feature, and I'm not sure what current model has it, or if it is available at all, but if it is, it is worth the extra $.

I'm surprised to read all the posts saying people are in 4wd most of the time. 4wd (of the type used in compact tractors)wears the driveline faster and digs the ground more, so I would think it should not be used unless really needed.

I have a Deere 4510 with a loader, cab, and filled tires. It has enough weight and traction to do most things in 2wd. I switch on 4wd if it starts to slip.

At this time of year I blow snow on my street in 2wd with no trouble, switching to 4wd on one part of a steep driveway

When the 'always in 4WD' guys have to replace the front crown and pinion gear set in their CUT they will do a whole lot more 2WD.

Happened to me. Price was in the $1500. range for gear set only.

Too much FEL work without adaquate weights over worked the frt differential causing the 8 bolts that fasten the crown gear to slacken and back out thereby trashing the gear set.

When I opened the differential there was only one bolt sheared off (assume that it was the last one holding) all the other holes were empty with the remenents sitting in the bottom of the differential. The back and forth motions caused the bolts to unscrew themselves and back out. When I rebuilt I used locktight and lockwired the bolts rather than the factory fold over tab things.

I can assure you that my weights are now always on the back when FEL is in use and that ALL travel is in 2WD.
With chains on all blower work is also 2WD as well as plowing snow.

One just has to look at the wheel sizes to determine that the rear is supposed to do most of the work.
The front is but a 'helper'.
