How often do you run in 540E / ePTO?

I use 540e about half the time. Great feature when you don't need all your power, but if I only needed E-pto I would have bought a lower hp tractor

It's funny, I'd like a larger tractor and I'm only looking at models with EPTO because I would most likely always keep it in EPTO. Although more PTO power could be helpful, I can't say I really "need" it for anything.

There is no reason why a wood chipper wouldn't work just like normal with your tractor in economy mode, as long as you don't need the extra power of course.

I use epto about 100 percent of the time simply to reduce fuel consumption and noise. I have a Wally BX62r, hydraulic feed chipper on a JD 5425 that works fine using epto. Remember to turn etpo off if you want to get max rpm out of the engine if you are driving the tractor on the road.

That is good to know. I'm looking to buy a chipper just like that. It's good to know you are running yours in 540E just fine.

How big of a limb can it take, Darin?

I rented a Bandit chipper behind my pickup all weekend and got a lot of chipping done.

But a PTO chipper that I can drag to wherever I want on the back of the tractor and shred brush would probably be the #1 used implement of mine.

I have not used it much lately. I have considered selling it.

You could run a real good sized chipper with your tractor. Try doing a search for member "Furu" I think he has a 10" chipper behind his JD 4720. He may be able to give you some insight on how well it chips large limbs/small trees.

Just an update here... I got a Wallenstein BX62s a couple weeks ago, and finally got to play with it last week (it's been so wet here lately!)

I ran it in 540E the whole time, and it ran like a champ. There was one 4-5" hardwood limb that I ran through it... I could see the dash that at the height of chipping that piece (about 4 feet long) the PTO RPM went down into the 520's. However, the tractor handled it fine.

This will now probably be the most useful chore for my 540E - chipping downed limbs! Nice to save that fuel, and to have less noise and engine wear on the tractor! :thumbsup:
