I bought my son a really nice golf for $2K this spring as his learner and first car.

He just admitted that he drove it all weekend with the oil light on.

And the reason you are surprised is.... what?

I got my first car the hard way. I earned it.

And I took care of it.

There's a cause and effect relationship there.

Some folks just aren't mechanically inclined and don't understand how machines work. Super geniuses that can't remember righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. Doesn't mean they don't appreciate the value of a dollar earned.

Most young people have a natural (sense of) invincibility. One of the downsides of todays safety tech is that it can compound that thinking..... or lack thereof.

We have removed much of the negative feedback that used to be in place. Even back when, not everyone paid attention, but most people figured out that a 40 mph crash would really hurt, or worse.

Now that 70mph crashes are fairly survivable, it has caused some people to pay less attention to their driving. See the Will Rogers quote, about electric fences. Safety studies back this up.

Some of this safety tech would be more useful if people understood the limitations. People might leave a bit more braking distance when following vehicles, if they understood ABS better.

Right or wrong, we are moving towards self-driving cars. Soon, young people won't need to learn to drive, even if they need a car.

For us growing up a ticket would have meant loss of driving privilege even though we bought an paid for our vehicles.

I can honestly say we knew the folks were not kidding around and none of us ever got a ticket or in trouble with the law... we also never wrecked a car.

Maybe there is some truth to being held to a higher standard as more is expected.

My Grandfather passed away when I was 13... he always said he wanted to be my first passenger and couldn't wait for the day until I got my license and could take him for a ride in my soon to be finished Model A Ford... wasn't meant to be.

In reading what has been posted I can see why many want only the latest when it comes to safety and how I've been fortunate with automobiles...

One things is certain... it is just simpler to stay out of it and the parents will decide what is best car wise.

My nephew and nieces do have a head start when it comes to driving just as I did...

I let all of them have a chance behind the wheel on the farm and all were very thoughtful and careful... it was either driving the Suzuki 4sp Samurai or the 5spd F150... most started on my Craftsman Mower and the nephew has a very good hand when it comes to running the Kubota Backhoe...

Yeah, a ticket would have been bad juju. A wreck would have only been bad had I been negligent. Fortunately, I didn't have to find out. I have four older siblings. Only one of them learned to drive before 30. The one that did got in a wreck the first day she was driving. Fortunately, our mom was with her and it was the other guy's fault... he just left turned right in front of her. If she would have swerved left, she'd have gone into oncoming traffic and there was a car to her right, so BOOM! @#%^%^&%$$!!!! No serious injuries.

Only one time did I get in trouble while in possession of my folks' car. It wasn't a driving offense, but I drove to the scene of the indiscretion, soooo..... To make a long story short, when I was fessing up to what happened, my mom just looked at me and put out her hand with her open palm up.... I placed the keys in her hand. And then she said it.... "When you think you're responsible enough to ask for them back, come and see me..." OUCH!!! I still had to do driving chores for them, but I didn't ask for the keys for my own usage for several months.

When my son got his first clunker, I made sure it had a brake job first thing. Not long after, that his was the third car in a pile up on a rain slicked highway. To this day he says the brakes didn't work. No one was killed or as far as I know seriously injured in the accident and I'm greatful.

well -- i had over ten year old car when i was in high school- and my kids have the same thing. I pay for the insurance and fix it to keep it running . they pay for gas and any upgrades they wanted but it stays with the car as its mine but they never upgraded it with anything so its all good. once my kids graduate from college - they can buy whatever they want as long they can afford it.

I give up.
My eldest killed a pair of cars by ignoring oil level. Better at taking care since he bought his own car.

My daughter within a hour of getting learner permit drove over snow bank and under trampoline. Stated confusion with 'go and stop pedals'. I high school she was the one kid that wanted to drive my truck.

My youngest actually pays attention and takes car problems as a challenge to be fixed. He has also dented and damaged cars.

I viewed buying used cars for kids as insurance for the my wife's and my vehicles. Want something structurally sound for them to drive. Steel is replaceable, children are not.
