I just sold my BX24 and looking at either a B2320 HSD or B2320 DX.

I'm kind of sold on the DX (partly because of cost and how much I really get to use it). But I really like it's brute strength because of it's wide range of gearing.

One concern I have is if I'm in a Jam and I immediately can't think of the safest thing to do next. In the HSD model if I let go of everything stops. But if I panic and let go of everything in the DX, things keep going. I know it may com natural over to immediately push the clutch just as it is in the car. But I'm still a little concerned.

A good example is one time I misjudged the size and distance of a rock and I started going over it and almost tipped the BX24. It was not as simple as backing up to get out the predicament. I really had to stop and think. I ended up using the backhoe to get out of the Jam. My first reflex was to take my foot off HSD pedal once I realized I was in a pickle.

Any thoughts on this?

I would kick my self if i gave up my BH and Hyd tranny BX23 for a Gear tractor with out a BH.
That would be taking 2 steps backwards for me.

I think you are over thinking this.

Using the clutch will be instinct after a few hours use.

For someone that has never had an HSD to get a gear drive is one thing but after having had one, in my opinion, you will be one sick puppy. Most people that don' like the HST haven't had one. I believe you will get responses from most people that have owned both to go for HST. I'm sure you'll get responses from people that haven't and don't own one to push for gears to feel better about their choice. Ask those for gears if they've owned an HST. My 9th one is coming tomorrow and it's HST as were the previous 8. My WRX is straight transmission but I don't have a FEL on it.

Most of the time "surprises" come fast and furious. Like the time I was helping a neighbor remove a large tree limb that had fallen over his fence line. As the bucket lifted the limb off the wire, the tractor came up suddenly on one rear wheel! I immediately backed off power and the HST went to neutral causing the wheel to fall back on to the ground. My mistake was lifting at a bad angle--but the nature of HST quickly got me out of trouble.
Thats what I like about HST, instantaneous stop. I think the OP was really trying to say "Sometimes you just don't have time to think." We've all been there. Mike.

One thing you may want to keep in mind is that shifting gears on a tractor is not like shifting gears on a car. Essentially, the tractos=r has to be stopped in order to change gears. Going down hill on a geared tractor I lost control of it, couldn't stop, couldn't gear back and ended up with the tractor rolling down the hill sideways - no ROPS. I have never used it again and decided to buy an HST. Much safer, much more controllable. I can't think of a reason to go back to a geared tractor

1*Might be a way to attempt to relive the nostalgia of the old Ma Bell hand cranked wall phone.

Many newer gear drive tractors come with a sycronized transmission so you can shift on the go (just like a car) and also they come with brakes.
I know mine has these features.

I have had one and don't care for them.

I would go with the gear machine.

You have a set of learned reflexes, you could easily add to them, you could as easily learn a different set.

IOW it ain't as much about transmissions as it is about you.
or
Safety isn't about WHAT you drive, it is about HOW you drive and how you react to circumstances.
