How soon after the break in period

I also switched at 50 hours to full synthetic. I figure a car driving an average of 60 mph for 50 hours is 3,000 miles. Most break in periods (in the old days) were the first 500 miles if I remember correctly.
That's like 5 hours at 60.

After the rings have seated, you can switch. The rings will normally have seated in the first hour of operation if it was run hard. They do continue to wear in to the cylinder as more combustion heat / pressure is applied.

I like to drain and refill with new dino oil as soon as I get a machine home, then change to syn at the first scheduled change. Usually 50 hours. I use syn for the cold weather flow properties.

Your diesel mechanic is wrong. Instead of 'old wives tale' that's an 'old mechanics tale'.

There are plenty of vehicles that come direct from the factory with synthetic oil. Does anyone think the engines sit running on a dyno for 500 hours? 100 hrs?

Also, there are plenty of threads in this forum about the benefits of synthetic hyd fluid. The issue isn't whether syn fluids are better, they are. The issue are (1) Do YOU operate your tractor in an environment or in a manner where you can reap those benefits and if so, (2) Is it worth it to YOU.

If I lived in Nova Scotia and had to use my tractor in the winter, I'd switch to synthetic fluids at 50 hours. Heck, I live in PA, and have to use my tractor in the winter. I switched to syn long ago.
I agree with Mike. There are tons of vehicles that come from the manufacturer with synthetic. I would rather immediately change to synthetic vs. waiting for the first oil change. Using the mineral oil first is just depositing all the impurities from the mineral oil into your new machine. Unless you flush, a large majority of the impurities are still in your crank case even after it is drained, even if you flush there are still some present. Therefore when you put your synthetic in it has to clean up after the mineral oil, which uses your expensive additive package to do so. Lets bring on the debate because i know its coming.

Thanks Guys/Gals, I'm convinced to switch to synthetic which I think I was already, you've just reinforced my decision and yes I want to do it for the cold weather reasons as well. Please we don't need any battles over oil, everyone has their opinions and they are just that. Thanks a lot for your opinions.
