How to Build a Rock Wall like a Beginner

The Wall Looks great. It's not easy I know. I will attempt the same but I don't think the wall will be over 2 ft. We have a lot of ledge rock here which is flat for the most part. I hope that makes its easier. I'm sure the wall will look great when finished.

Nice looking wall. I have been drilling and splitting large boulders for the past few months to produce flat stone for walls. Will start building in the spring.

Those are fine looking rocks and your wall is definitely great. Are those rock sandstone? Unfortunately all the rock around here is round like a bowling ball and not at all easy to stack.

The rock are granite. They are from an old fireplace on my FIL home place. These stack fairly easy just a lot of random thickness and shapes. I have large piles still to move but usually have to wait until December for some cold weather...snakes and bees:eek:

Thanks for the complements...I know you guys are just being nice:D

I was able to mortar most of the dry stack part this weekend. I think I should be able to complete it next weekend except for the final top layer. I will need to go to the other farm and get a few of the thin flat rock.

Then I will finish filling in the back with fabric and washed stone. The wall is not very high but on the section that is finished I have 2" PVC about every 5-6' on the bottom for drainage. I also put some short pex pipe in a few places with fabric and washed stone behind. As long as it has taken for me to complete this I definitely don't want it falling down:)

Looks great. I wish I had a source of rocks. I have to buy them by the pound, and that gets crazy really fast!!!!

Ooooo. I gotta get my camera out and post picts of my walls. I have glacial granite, not nicely shaped rocks like hunterridge. Hmmm, that sounds a wee bit weird, doesn't it?

Well, I finished laying Saturday, put fabric and washed stone behind the wall. Just need some dirt to fill in. I have 45 acres here and no good dirt except for the 4 acre bottom:mad:. By the time I go to the other farm to get dirt I can have it delivered cheaper, $75.00 a load. And one load should do it. I just hate taking my good soil out of the bottom but may go ahead and get a few scoops.

I will get some pictures and post the finished product. I still need to go get some of the thinner flat rock to level out the top some. It is just a little wavy right now:D

I gained a lot of respect for the guys who originally put the chimney up. The odd size rock makes it hard to get even. The chimney that is still standing looks perfect.

I think this may be my last rock wall:D
