How to check hyd fluid

I have a B2150 HST great old tractor with 2000 hrs. How do you check the hyd fluid level, with engine running or not running? I've always checked it running but have a difference of opinion with a friend. Manual doesn't say.

Check with it on a flat level area. Running or not makes no difference. A better question would be 3pt up or down, FEL up of down. Not that it matters much, but I check with 3pt and FEL in a mid position - all cylinders about 1/2 stroke. Want the fluid level to be right in the middle.

If all cylinders are retracted (FEL down, 3pt down), you want the level full up to the top marking.

There is a lot of wiggle room with hydraulic levels as you probably know.
