How to check if starter is weak

bought a hydrometer. It appears two of the cells are low or bad. The battery was purchased new from Auto zone in August of 2012. I ordered an Interstate battery with more cold cranking amps. Hopefully this helps.

I put the new Interstate battery in my 422 today. She fired right up. Couldn't believe it. You know, I checked the old battery that was bought new by the previous owner in August of 2012 with a battery load tester and it read fine. However after Tim suggested I purchase a hydrometer and check each cell, is when I found the two bad cells. I would have pulled the starter today maybe the motor too.

I really love this forum. The suggestions, tips and experiences from other members are priceless.

That battery should still be under warranty and you should be able to get a free replacement.

It is my belief that if you can jump start an engine then the starter. If you cannot then it's not the battery but wiring or starter. This is a good starting point anyway. I had a rambler starter that worked fine when cold, but would not crank when hot. One of the bushings was worn and it allowed the armature to drag on the stator. Another test is to test no load current (starter removed from engine) and loaded current. These must meet the manufactures specifications.
