And one more thing on the Fish (Flitch) plate - what is the proper length and width. I assume a few inches on each side and nearly the whole width of the side of the tub (so a 3x7 or so)

Flitch plates?? That would be a new one for me. I've added fishplates onto center sill's of RR cars. I'll attach a photo of a properly installed one onto a auto frame.

OK, and one more question based on the picture, do I need to do center holes (cutouts) on my fishplate? It seems too small for it but I get it adds structural integrity.

If your plate is just 3x7 you could add slot shaped holes in the the center, instead of the round ones. If your plate goes up against a frame member or corner, then it should be a different style cut plate. Here is pictures of a design that might work for you... Do note, in the top design, its suppose to be welded 100%. Not so in the lower one.

Does this help??????

I'm at a real disadvantage trying to help in these situation:eek::eek:. The majority of my welding was done off engineered blueprints. Not really up for discussion with blueprints. You either do as the print says, or the company will find someone else to do it.

Well gee, maybe I'm at an advantage here. I spent 20 years in the energy business doing mostly repairs.

I've done very little repair work. I built bridges, container ship docks for a living. I did work for 3-years in a fab shop building nuclear waste tanks. Here again, all off blueprints.

In reference to the auto frame repaired with a fishplate, I note that a long rectangular plate is welded to the top of the frame by welding through holes drilled in the plate. What's that type of weld called (when you fill up a hole to connect plate to base rather than weld edges)?
