I've got a 2 acre pond and this year for some reason a beaver has taken up residence in it. He only comes out at about dusk and you can't get near him. Once he sees us he slaps his tail on the water - much louder than I would have expected but kind of fun to show off when friends come over. Anyway, he is clearing out a stand of small trees I wanted to cut down but I was going to stack them to burn not drag them all over the pond!! He is really starting to make a mess and I'm afraid he will start chewing on trees I don't want to be rid of. Any suggestions of how to get rid of him without sending him to the great pond in the sky??

thanks
Scott

You have many options. I need to make one point though... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif where there is one, there could be many.

Anyway -

Contact your local game warden to ensure you can deal with it. Use the term "pest" quite often. I do think Beavers are out of season at the moment.

To encourage the animal(s) to move elsewhere is a difficult process. You can try busting up the dams. This is difficult and dangerous work. You could try fencing off food supplies. This is expensive.

Another alternative is trapping. Either a humane trap for relocation, or a trap that gets them dead instantly. Conibear makes a good one that services me well. IMHO.

Trapping too can be tedious and dangerous, so watch out. That said, maybe a trapper for hire is something you should look at. It may be cheaper for you, time, trap cost, possible injury. The pelt should be factored into the price too, IMHO.

If your into trying for the prize with a gun, perhaps another person can help you out by poking holes in the dam to attract the animal(s) to begin with.

Once again, check with your local game wardens.

Good Luck.

I am in Toney, about 10 miles north of Huntsville. Where did you live?

Scott,
I don't think you'll have much luck there. In some areas the Dept of Natural Resources will live trap and relocate nuisance animals for you. Don't know about where you live. Like riptides said, you can try to separate them from their forage, which would be difficult and expensive. If you can't get them relocated, I'd probably either shoot them or look at the Conibear 330 body grip traps and set them underwater in their runs. Quick, humane death. DO NOT set these traps above the water. They are large enough to catch many other domesticated animals that you don't want to catch. In many areas it is illegal to set these traps on land (above water-level).

Good luck!

For a temporary solution, you can put stove pipes around the trees that you want to save. Beavers won't attack metal. If it is a large tree, then you will have to join a few together to make the ring closure. If you have a lot of trees, then this can get expensive and time consuming.

most definitely will!!!have bin gone bout 4 yrs now and most of my friends were my now ex wives!!!!u no what that means...but besides the point.......with the arsena being close by and all huntsville and the surrounding area have become very politically correct!!!!!!!!!!!! tree huggers...greenies!!all that bs.......personally i wouldnt tell anyone bout yer problem...especially not the most powerful law enforcement officer in the area!!!!!(a warden!!!!!!!!!!!!) if u have a problem!!!!!!! deal with it or find a buddy who will help..not someone that's gonna ever turn on u though!!! it's called poaching in their book and in mine it's protection of your personal rights... one of the most important of our amendments!!!
If i still lived down there we'd b buds and u pay for the bud's and we'd skinem and eatem...same family as a woodchuck which is awesome 2!!!
