SydKen,

Since the pond was man made it limits what you can do I suppose. If this was a beaver made pond you could put in a pond leveler to draw down the water and the beaver(s) would leave. I guess you could do to that with your pond as a last resort.....

Check what the local rules are on beaver and pest management. There might be a season on beaver and even if there is if you can declare them as a pest you should be able to get the permit to get rid of them. In NC there tain't no permit to pull on pest beavers. You can kill them. What you CANNOT do is live trap them and dump the problem on someone else.

Beaver travel the at sunrise and sun set. The also are active at night and the early am. You should be able to see their trails as where they are coming out of the water to feed. All you have to do is go outside and listen. You will know when they are eating. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

To protect the trees I put up chicken wire around the trunks. Cheap and not to ugly. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif It worked and saved some trees. The pond killed hundreds more but that is another story.

Hopefully your state will allow you to take care of the problem without a lot of hastles.

Good Luck,
Dan McCarty

( Any suggestions of how to get rid of him without sending him to the great pond in the sky?? )

Even if you got him moved, another beaver will eventually come to take it's place.

after many years of holding various elected postitions in town, I had hit "tilt".. I guess I cna't adapt to the city tyoe people that are moving in by the droves. I have yet to a single one, stop, and ask someone, what are the problems here or how do they do this out this way, etc, etc.. They come in, with that city attitude, we know what we want and also what you need. They vote in all kinds of stuff, rarely is anything of any significance, then complain about a year later because they just realized their taxes on a 1800sq ft home is twice what a 3 decker costs in greater Boston.. All monies are always voted to the schools. Sooner or later, these new types will realize schools, fire, police, anbulance and even the school busses are useless unless you maintain some kind of infrastructure.. After 25 years of dealing with these ultra liberals, We had to move out of that mentality.. Now where I live is smaller than Holland.. Holland right now has 2400 vs 660 when we first moved there. Where I'm at now, has near 700. But, and it's a big but,, here it is 50/50 as far as liberal, ultra liberal and conservative.. It makes it a lot easier to deal with.. Holland,, Massachusetts in general will someday realize they can't save every single thing, living or not.. They can pass all the restrictions they want.. Someday, when all their roads are impassable and things really start coming apart, people dieing on the way to a hospital, roads washed out for good, school kids that may have to walk 1/4 mile to get on a bus, God forbid this may happen, and things generally fall apart, then, and only then, the ultra liberals will pass a law where the "Beaver" becomes the new state mascot..

............. and back to the beavers.

You'll note in my note, them term in quotes, PEST.
If you do approach your governing authority this key word should be repeated early and often.

I had a neighbor who was pretty adament about letting them be. And I do admit to having feelings for them. Everything has a right to live and its own space. For me my feelings changed when to back shed trail was blocked, when the orchard disappeared, and when the tree ended up on the swing set.
My neighbors attitude was not changed by all of my efforts.
Their day came when the car was blocked by not one, but many trees.

We trapped that night.

OK, I checked the state Conservation Extension Service website and found an article entitled "Beaver Control in Alabama". It discusses how the beaver population has changed over the last 75 or so years and the best way to handle the "problems" beavers pose for Alabama landowners. It discusses many ways to control them - trapping, snaring, annual harvest and yes shooting them!! It even goes on to recommend the type of gun and shot that works best : " A 12-gauge shotgun with #4 buckshot or BB shot is a good weapon for this technique. "

Aint Alabama great!!

Polecat, I'm not a drinker, but I'll bet we could find a fish or two swimming around in that pond somewhere /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well if you grill them, don't plan on using the charcoal again.

They have to be the greasiest meat on earth. Well duh! They do live in the water.... Anyway, not the tastiest thing....
