I am a licensed commercial applicator in south Louisiana, and have been licensed for about 30 years. I do lots of herbicide applications to lawns, and mostly to athletic fields.
MSMA is NOT labeled for use on 'cool season' or northern grasses, such as fescue, kentuckey blue grass or ryegrass. MSMA will kill those grasses.
In fact, MSMA is no longer labeled for use on ANY lawns, athletic fields, etc. It is only labeled for use on golf courses and sod farms. Any use of MSMA that is not on the label is breaking the law.
As for crabgrass control, I have not been very successful with 'quinclorac'. It's sort of 'hit and miss'. I have not found a good product for 'post emerge' control of crabgrass, since MSMA can no longer be used.
Your best chance for crabgrass control is to use a good 'pre-emerge' product. These products need to be applied BEFORE the crabgrass germinates in spring, and will control germination for 60-90 days. Therefore, a second or third application may be needed, especially in warmer climates.
Nutsedge control has gotten a lot easier with the release of newer herbicides, such as sedgehammer. I use a product called 'Certainty' by Monsanto. Certainty controls both yellow and purple nutsedge, along with green kylinga. Sedgehammer is not as effective on purple nutsedge and the green kylinga.
Please always read and follow the label on whatever products you apply.
