I am trying to replace the driveshaft on a flail mower that I bought at auction with a new one. I have removed the two bolts that secure the collar of the shaft to the gearbox spline but am unable to get the collar off. There seems to be a slit on the sides of the collar where the bolts tighten the collar to the spline. I took a chisel and ga e it a whack but nothing moved. I am afraid to hit it very hard for fear that I might damage the gearbox.

Does anyone have and ideas about how to get the collar off the spline. I doubt that it has ever been taken off since then it was new.

Thanks

Maybe put some heat to it and give it a whack or two..

Find a couple screwdrivers or small chisles that will just fit into the slit a little and tap them in a bit further. Use some penetrating oil too. The screwdriver tip wedge action will spread the slit a little bit and loosen the collar enough so you can get it off.

Just loosen the bolts and run it for a while?

If you have room where you can get on it with a three jaw puller, that would be the way I'd do it. I like the idea of spreading it a bit and spraying some penetrating oil in there to help things.
If it's really stuck, try an air hammer with a dull chisel, preferably with some preload from the puller.

OK Albert, Here we go.

Which shaft are you intent on removing and why????????????????????????????????

Is it because it is too short for your mules PTO center line to avoid damaging the stub shaft and the PTO housing?

I would like to understand why you are doing this surgery.

Is removing the slip clutch from the flail mower something you are intent on doing and replacing it with a cardan shaft??????

Have you removed the snap rings that hold the cross/spider/u-joint in the yokes???

If you have some PB blaster I wold like you to spray the splines and also spray inside the collar to help break it loose.

Candidly your going to have to start at the gearbox and disconnect the cross shaft and then unbolt the gear box and then you can access the shaft and collar.

I need to see more images and have more information before you go any further and cause yourself more pain and work.

I am removing it because this was bought at an auction and it only had half the pto shaft. The half that went to the tractor was missing. I don't think you can buy half of the pto shaft.

The pto shaft that I bought to replace is also a slip clutch, so basically I am trying to get the old shaft off so I can put the new one on. I don't really see how removing the snap rings is going to help me get the collar off the shaft??

Would taking the clutch apart so you can get to the front side help? Heat, fluid, tools....?

You are going to have to drive a wedge of some sort in the split on both sides then spray some penetrating oil in the splines. Unfortunately you will have to beat the heck out of it to break it free. I wouldn't worry about damaging the gear box. If you have a thin pneumatic chisel that will fit in the split groove, that would be the easiest way to loosen the shaft. You may need to build some small shims that will fit in the groove to hold it open when you are spreading it with your chisel. Spread it from both sides while inserting the shims from each side to hold the open tension on it .

it could be that there is a snap ring at the end of the shaft, and you'd need to take the clutch apart to see that,(or just look in the manual)..
