Backhoe How to load a backhoe

There used to be a class offered in college that was equipment operating. Lasted for 2 semesters. One of the local farm kids that grew up on tractors loaded a backhoe in the same fashion. The dean was NOT amused and thus the class went bye bye. Pissed me off as I was signed up for the next semester.

when i was a ten wheeler driver i was on a job at san diego state univ. putting in an handicap elevater thing from one level to another. the bh had to build a landing about 8 feet high, he dug out what he could from the lower level.he did the same thing in the first pics i was in amazed how easy he made it look. jon

A couple years ago the UP mainline outside my office window was doing a tie replacement project. They used one of those pieces of equipment to unload the new ties out of the gondola cars and spread them out along the ROW.

That unit is pretty safe, but even if it wasn't there isn't much that can be done. Major railroads in America are almost their own sovereign nation. Don't beleive me? What other private corporation has their own federally sanctioned police officers...

I saw Norfolk Southern unloading crossties one day with a medium sized excavator (track hoe) on top of a gondola car like that. The excavator had a grapple bucket on it and he would pick up a bundle of crossties, swing around, and set them on the ground. All the while the train was moving slowly down the track. When he emptied a car he would just drive across to another one. Coolest thing I've ever seen.


I have a friend that works for the railroad and he said that they load the excavator a crane. It stays on a car on the train to travel from one area to another.

Why? The machine is riding the rails just like a train. My guess is that it would either freeze in place or slouch back down to the rails. That is something the engineers should have taken into account in failure analysis.

Of course, my opinion is as wild a guess as most of the people on that "will it take off?" thread

You can't imagine what would happen if the swing boom hose or simillar blew while a 7ton tractor is balancing on the dipper arm and a narrow bucket 10' in the air ????? I think they have a position vaccant for you .

There is no reason to be insulting. Learn to spell, though. Watch the video on the manufacture's site. The operator is employed by the manufacturer.

You are right, my criticizing your spelling was uncalled for and I regretted it. I apologize. I will take your word for it that you meant no offense.

I still stand by my opinion that a combination of engineering and operator knowledge makes that dangerous activity doable.

I'm sure after they do it enough, they don't think about it. Theres lost of risky occupations. Its not much different than flying a helicopter for example, where theres plenty of things that can fail, and your done. I would certainly think they considered this, and possibly made some modifications when they remanufactured these machines.

I never said I had no issues with it. I just posed a question and looked at it from an engineering standpoint.

I'm still more impressed with that excavator on top of the smoke stack, that has to be 200 feet up or more!!!
As far as that car hopper thing, in the video they show it being operated with a remote, maybe they could load/unload it with the remote?

As I was looking at this, all I could think of was the pin that broke in my backhoe boom while digging stumps. If ya think things happen fast when a line ruptures, try breaking the boom pin under your feet. Some things just can't be engineered to be safe, because we will always push machines and ourselves past the limit....Dan.

That smoke stack deal , they have a crane that is taller than the stack right ? Why would they not have a heavy wrecking ball down the centre giving it a little stir around from the top down ? Or give it a gentle tap around the outside making the bricks fall harmlessly down the centre of the stack ? Or if i wanted to get imaginative an adjustable steel ring with a couple of contricting hydraulic rams to lower around the outside and crush it a couple of feet at a time .

I would think that if the operator is belted in (which he would have to be very stupid to not be) even if the arm broke, he might be shooken up but he should be alive and realtivly unhurt, it looks this is done on a backhoe with a full ROPS cab.

A smoke stack that high has to be very strong to keep from collapsing from its own weight. In the 3rd photo you can see the walls are at least 2' thick, and they are likely thicker as they go down.

You would need a good swing to put a dent it that with a wrecking ball. So much so that I would think it would be impractical, (i.e. the boom would have to be almost twice as high, and I'm not sure you want to shake a boom that long as violently as a wrecking ball would.)

They could have used explosives, since they did not, this opens the possibility that there are nearby structures that they did not want damaged.

The fact that they went through the trouble to put an excavator with a hammer up there, suggests it was necessary.

Just the ride up there is probably more than most people could take.

That stack did look pretty thick to support the weight of that demolition rig. Even if the crane was taking some of the weight off. I was surprised that they didn't start with shaped explosives at the top to try and get it to crumple inward at least partially. As mentioned it is pretty thick. And I would bet it was built a long time ago. Imagine the brick and mud crew that it took to put it up.. They were likely hauling some big nards to do that.
